Christmas has come and gone...again! My teenage kids and wife are happy with this year's prezzies....and I'm happy with mine ;-) :-) Now it's time to look forward to 2012 and sow the seeds for big prezzies in 2012......

You may enter any of the options: (i), (ii), (iii), (iv).

Monthly Competition for January 2012:

For the January 2012 “>20%” monthly oil stock competition, which oil stocks will have the greatest move for

(i) >20% gain?
(ii) >20% loss?

You may enter two stocks, one for (i) and one for (ii). More than one person may enter the same stock. The deadline for the January 2012 competition is midnight on Monday (market closed), 2 January 2012.

Annual Competition for 2012:

For the 2012 Outrageous “>200%” Annual Oil Stock Competition for period 1 Jan to 31 Dec 2012, which oil stocks will have the greatest move for

(iii) >200% gain?
(iv) >50% loss (i.e. down a lot)

You may enter two stocks, one for (iii) and one for (iv). More than one person may enter the same stock. Deadline for the annual competition is also midnight on Monday (market closed), 2 January 2012.

Jan 2012 Competition:

(i) >20% Up: AEX. Unexpectedly good drilling results from Ntorya-1 in Tanzania.
(ii) >20% Down: XTR. Unexpectedly poor drilling result from the Luna prospect in Denmark.

2012 Competition:

(iii) >200% Up: MOIL. Favourable drilling results in 2012. Heavy oil plant in smooth operation in second half of 2012.
(iv) >50% Down: XEL. Possible “Ramco” poor well flow deliverability scenario if extended flow test does not last.

Happy New Year to all. The London fireworks were exceptional this year.....

Jan 2012:
1) >20% up, AEX , on Ntorya-1 well results being better than expected
2) <20% down, Blvn

1) >200% up, torn between GKP ( a highly likely takeout in my view) or XEL (surely they will get their act together and see a resurgent share p0rice from current lows.

2)<200% down, RKH, on a resumption of teh Falklands War round two as the Argentinians try their luck.

Regrettably (or perhaps just as well! ;-) ) I must constrain my picks to avoid certain companies.

My general view of the markets is that the early part of the year is likely to be a continuation of the struggle between bulls and bears, as margin pressures become evident on most trading companies and various retailers (and associated companies) hit the buffers. However, companies with pricing power will continue to do well and I think that overall the markets will end the year ahead, despite the Euro issues and continuing international political unrest. I'd see the FTSE100 at around 6600 at year-end, as the attractions of bonds and cash both wane.

For oil companies, the politcal unrest element could well be quite important. Depending on where it occurs, the oil price could come under pressure or soar. So I wouldn't be so rash as to guess the path of oil prices. However, it seems to me that share prices in the sector are discounting both a significant oil price fall and a continued weak economy - and whilst the Eurozone economy will likely be pretty weak, I think the UK, US and most of the emerging markets will do OK (especially Brazil and India). So I'm actually more optimistic for 2012 than I was for 2011 - and I think we will finally start to see some bottom-fishing done.

Jan 2012:
1) >20% up, BG (LON:BG.) .....bid rumours?
2) <20% down, Melrose Resources (LON:MRS) .....politics

2012
1) >200% up, Global Petroleum (LON:GBP) ....cheap enough to make that sort of move up and reorganisation of assets, coupled with the activities of others, could push the price up materially
2)<50% down, Borders & Southern (LON:BOR) ....drilling disappointments, compounded by Argie bargie when William arrives (though of course the first bit might be completely wrong, given their upcoming two-well programme!)

On an H1 view, I think SOCO International (LON:SIA) will do very well....but will be outperformed by others over both a month and a year (c. 100% or so won't be enough......).

For 20% up I shall go for Aminex on the basis of good results from the Ntorya drill. It is about time the company had a change in fortune.

For 20% down I shall go for Heritage Oil with tensions in ME and the continuation of the tax dispute with the Ugandan authorities.

For 200% up I shall go for PanContinental Oil and Gas (ASX:PCL) on the basis of good drilling results from the giant Mbwaa prospect in L8 offshore Kenya and good solid progress in their acreage offshore Namibia.

No down.

Further to my post, I would like to add that 75% of my portfolio lies in SOCO and I have held for well over a decade. I am extremely bullish about SIA and I am sure that 2012 is going to be a good year. Much as I would like to have SIA as a year end entry I feel that a 200% gain may be too ambitious. I am expecting a rise in excess of 100% but less than 200%. Who knows? I hope I am wrong. There could be some pleasnt surprises especiallly with TGD.

20% up, AEX (hopefully a commercial oil strike at Ntorya (or gas with high %age of condensates) which would prove up the rest of the onshore, and with that scenario there would be substantial interest. Of course anything sub-commercial would not be welcomed. Fingers crossed.
20% down PCI - monkey with a pin.

Annual 2012

200% up GKP - Bid for at some point?
50% down RKH - as expressed in post 3.

Christian12 opened the 2012 account with a massive 126% gain on LGO.
The GKP gang did well, too, with a pretty good 45% gain. Congrat to the
above and all the gainers in the January 2012 >20% Up competition!!!

The >20% Down competition for January 2012 was won by Proselenes, Christian12
and McDougall with EOG going down by 15%. Congrat!!!

Christian12 deserves a special mention for it is unusual for someone to win
both the Up and Down competitions in the same month!!!

Even with a weak share price over the last couple of months in 2012, MAGP still managed a very impressive gain of 472% over the course of 2012!!! Judging by the number of onshore wells they have been drilling in the US, I wouldn't be surprised if their motto is "Drill, baby, drill....."!!! Congratulations to Scruttocks for winning the 2012 Outrageous >200% Oil Stock Competition!!!

As for the Outrageous >50% Down Oil Stock Competition, poor XTR got badly burnt with a couple of non commercial wells, one of them being as dry as a bone; total loss of value was a massive 93% down in its share price in 2012. Congratulations to Saggy101 for predicting the eye catching drop and winning this competition!!!
