Abcam, the Cambridge based online antibody supplier, announced the acquisition of MitoSciences Inc for £3.7 million, comprising £2.6 million cash and the balance in shares.

Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Oregon, MitoSciences is recognised as one of the leading providers of mitochondrial DNA research tools focusing on areas of metabolism and apoptosis. It has a catalogue of more than 200 products and product development capability. For the year to December 2010, Mitosciences achieved sales of $2.1 million.

The acquisition adds to Abcam's range of protein research tools, thus supporting the strategy of becoming global leader in this area.
