This being "AGM season", ShareSoc Directors and members have been busy attending lots of AGMs. Reports on the following companies' AGMs have been posted recently:

Could someone from ShareSoc clarify whether, if ShareSoc were to claim to "represent the views of X individual shareholders", the number X is simply the number of member registrations on their website?

What about people who register as members on the website simply to read the potentially interesting content about AGMs, but who have less interest in the activist campaigning side of things? Are their numbers included in those who ShareSoc "represent"?

The number of members is the number registered with us. We have no way of knowing whether all members agree with all of our policies, but ShareSoc's member network provides a convenient channel for members to let us know if they disagree with any of our policies/aims. In particular, when we respond to official consultations, our draft responses are posted there for comment before being finalised.

When we consider new policies/actions we post them there too (as well as publishing articles in our newsletter), so our members have plenty of scope to object if they disagree. Judging by the feedback on the members network and response at our AGM, I am confident that we have our members' support and are representative of our membership.

New ShareSoc chairman, Stan Grierson, attended BP's AGM last week and quizzed the Board. It was a lively affair. Given the large number of shareholders with interests in BP, on this occasion we're making the report available to all in our public blog: http://www.sharesoc.org/blog.html

Does anyone know what's the rationale for making reports members-only?

The rationale is that it takes a very considerable amount of time & effort (and some expense) to attend the meetings and report on them.

We do not consider it unreasonable that in exchange for that work, we should request that those wishing to read them should join our not-for-profit organisation. Directly analogous to Stockopedia needing to charge for access to the data & services it provides.

It's not unreasonable as such but it's a bid odd to bundle the advocacy function with the "journalistic" function. The bundling opens the group to the accusation that the membership numbers are inflated by having people who are "just there for the tips", and conversely people who disagree with the advocacy work but would possibly pay for the reports if you sold them unbundled are also excluded.

With open access, the "reward" is higher visibility (links, indexing in search engines, etc, the web really likes openness!) which may allow the reports to bring in potential members, more clearly supportive of the society's goals, and possibly more numerous due to the extra visibility. Many people contribute free writing for mere fame and glory, which I'm sure your writers and members also read and benefit from. As an ecosystem it works better that way than each of us being in our own little walled garden.

Stockopedia is not so directly analogous in that they resell vendor data, and it's hard or maybe impossible to do such a service under a free (or freemium) access model.
