Character to distribute Michael Jackson Dolls

Character Group this morning announced that They Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' with a deal to distribute Michael Jackson dolls in the UK later in the year.

Each figure will be a faithful reproduction of Michael Jackson in some of his most memorable iconic poses. As would befit the "King of Pop", they will be made to the highest specification and fully articulated with each figure being numbered and displayed in commemorative packaging.

Industry commentators stated that they believe this to be one of the more Off The Wall products that Character have been involved with - but they don't think it will necessarily be Bad for the group. When contacted this morning Chairman Richard King said that he "didn't yet know if they would be Black or White."

I couldn't understand the reaction to this announcement by Character. What's "off the wall" about it?
People are still spending millions on Elvis memorabilia decades after he passed away.
If there's a market, then why not go for it?

Character have made a success of marketing GoGo Pets and Peppa Pig,
is Michael Jackson more "off the wall"?

It's toys and pastimes we're talking about!

I'm up 50% on Character, they're doing all the right things,
the management and direction are first-rate,
no complaints.

If they ARE getting to 5% market share, as is mentioned on page 5 of their annual report to August 2009
(which I cannot now download to put on here!), then profits will rocket:

I couldn't, however, reconcile this statement in the annual report with
the more recent announcement of a 1.2% increase in sales for September-December 2009
compared with a market down 8.5%. That wouldn't jig with market share going from
3% to over 5%, although it may be that the earlier 3% was in the period
when sales were in the post-Woolworths trough.

I worked out that if Character were to achieve a 5% market share with recovered margins,
allowing for overhead increases and tax, we could be looking at a p/e of below 2!
All dependent on market share, of course.

No wonder (in this company 50% owned by directors) that they have
launched a fresh stock buy-back programme.

For me, this is one of the most attractive, relatively low-risk prospects around.
