I agree, Linux Mint is a great upgrade. A worthwhile performance boost and very much less hassle. Even my elderly mother-in-law likes it better.

I think Germany & France get good value from funding Greek bail-outs. Without the drag from the poorer EU members, the Euro might be somewhat higher, making exports from better off EU counties such as Germany & France more costly outside the EU.
