Hi all, I'm very new to the stock investing world, I've been investing with Nutmeg (a fully managed, hands-off portfolio) for about 5 years but after about 8-12 months of reading and research, I've decided to use what (I  think) I've learned to build my own portfolio. I'm only investing money I can afford to lose, but obviously, I'd rather not, or all this effort will have been for nothing. I'm probably going to invest in a small number of mutual funds that track a few different indexes to provide some stability and exposure to markets outside the UK, but then I'll be looking for some individual UK stocks to invest in, here is my problem...

I can't find many!

With all the reading I've done I've settled on a few core principles when looking for companies to invest in:

  • Increasing profit over the last few years
  • Increasing sales over the previous few years (where appropriate)
  • Debt less than 3 times net profit
  • Increasing dividends over the previous few years (where applicable)
  • Positive director dealings
  • A generally positive outlook and a good reputation

There are many more I'd like to consider but even with this short list it whittles the list down to only a handful (40ish) of options and then there will be indicators that put me off like "Earnings Manipulation Risk", low stock rank,  etc.

I'd like to eventually identify around 10 stocks to add to my portfolio, I'm in no rush to do this and happy to take the time to do the research, but in my reading, you hear of people having portfolios of hundreds or even thousands of stocks, how do they find all these decent stocks!

What am I doing wrong? Am I being too risk-averse and I should just go for it? Am I expecting too much?  Should I be looking overseas instead of focusing on the UK market?

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you all.
