Against my general principle of not answering calls from numbers I do not recognise, I just fielded a call from a broker selling the Alibaba IPO. I was told that this is likely to come to the market at a discount. I have not done any research of my own yet but will do but would be interested to get thoughts of others who may have already considered participating.

Im not going to comment on the IPO and the merits or otherwise of Alibaba but I would caution you on the company that phoned you. It all sounds like a fishing exercise from a boiler room to me.

I gather they're trading a bit higher than that on the grey market at IG(??)
So anyone looking to buy on day one is likely to be disappointed at the price available. Certainly wouldn't buy any myself.
