Vision Pro is it a revolution?
Obviously not a revolution - is it simply nota pimped up oculus?
As with any new hardware preoject more likely to be a white elephant than anything else. Apple have plenty of funds available to throw at vanity projects like this . I remember losing a bet to my mate 25 years ago saying that in 20 years time peeps wont still be playing shooty games with mouse and keyboard en masse - times will have moved on. Reality is i suspect most 3d shooty hardcore gamers probably still use a mouse and a keyboard and monitor despite more fancy stuff becoming available.
I picked up on this quote from the FT’s correspondent yesterday
Apple succeeded in demonstrating a vision of AR/VR that felt here and now, in stark contrast to the avatar-filled “metaverse” envisioned by Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg.
“To many, the metaverse concept sounds and feels too far out, driving a lack of belief of when that will ever materialise,” said Sam Cole, CEO of immersive fitness app FitXR. “What we saw today felt natural, felt obvious, it felt accessible.”
Munster from Deepwater Asset Management said he was initially “shocked” by the $3,500 price point and drafted a note to clients emphasising his disappointment. After using it, he conceded his perspective had “totally” changed. “I think it’s priced right,” he said.”
Now the dust has settled and after reflection, they have definitely nailed it as a polished product and experience and Apple has the ecosystem to exploit it.
Not sure its significant in the near term but sense this will be a grower. This could well be the future, in the same way Apple transformed the smart phone concept to something we cant do without today.
I remember the first iPhones seemed extremely expensive in a time when you picked up a decent phone within your price plan so it was effectively free. Apple now sells 100m iPhones a year at an average of $988 which also helps leverage their AppStore turn over of $1.1Trillion. Its moved customer expectation. I buy a new iPhone every 12-24 months @ £1500 and I am not alone.
It wont be a an iphone but Apple has invested $100B in the project so its serious. Its like the Tesla S in that they are making the best model first then more consumer focussed cheaper models will likely trickle down.
I wouldn't bet against it.
Microsoft have pretty much binned the HoloLens because of lack of demand despite investing billions up to this point.
It’s a solution in need of a problem. Oh look I can play football in a virtual stadium. Or I could just go to the park with my mates and drink some beer.
“I buy a new iPhone every 12-24 months @ £1500 and I am not alone”
I’d rather get laid. Each to their own.
Thunderball thanks for your thoughtful comment. Vision Pro appears to be a technical tour de force. Is it good enough for me to buy more Apple shares now? I guess we need to try it out first(It’s not scheduled for release in the US until Q1 2024)
Long term the lesson seems to be don’t bet against apple no one would have thought someone would spend best part of a grand on an iPhone or Apple Watch but they do
Will this product be the same sort of success I don’t know maybe maybe not but I wouldn’t bet against it
Lots of people saying it will fail because they personally can't think of a use for it or don't want to pay the price. There are lots of professional situations where the price is loose change it it meets a need. If it succeeds and takes off the tech will improve and the price may come down. It lacks a killer app for mass uptake, but this is presumably why it was premiered to the developer conference, when it finally comes out the applications may be there for it.
Think of trading floors. What if, instead of banks of 6 or 8 screens, they had a head up display containing tens of screens which moved into view as events of interest manifested. The savings in IT equipment, office space, electricity and IT support alone would justify a price ten times higher. If it also increased effectiveness you could multiply that price by another 10.
Aircraft simulators, driver training or anything requiring large high resolution displays? It is difficult to remember what phones were like before the iPhone, in ten years time we may say something similar about the VP.
When the Watch came out I thought I'd give it a few iterations, I did and lost interest. I will give the VP a few iterations.
Cae (NYQ:CAE) . This is a Canadian Company quoted on the Toronto, stock exchange and also in New York.
They provide pilot training for both civil and military use. The website gives some insight into their use of augmented and virtual reality. At present, I believe they use Microsoft HoloLens in many of their systems. However, Vision Pro looks like a slot in for them
Apple are the king of the hill imo, but business still buys Android and Samsung because its cheap. Same with electric cars, same with VR headsets - brilliant tech but cost. There are gadget guys and girls who love the next best thing and £1k is doable for some but above that then gets serious investment land. And bought on freebee credit which fast comes around.
Anyway was self conscious wearing apply buds at first but a VR headset on the Underground in the morning ... mmmm.
Would need to 'rent' one for a bit to try out before shelling out. And not the 100 day return policy which expect will be necessary. Advice - open carefully and save the box.
Fighter pilots and lots of commercial applications will be one day essential - drones control, surgery who knows. So if apple can be more business and less 'sillycon valley' they will retain the King title.
PS. a surgeon from afar operating on my hernia with VR goggles and a robot connected to the internet. Advice - forget safe investments - go for it.
In an idle moment, I totted up the price of buying a reasonable range of Apple products. I came to a figure of about £8,000 say US$10,000. Perhaps US$3500 for Vision Pro is not out of line?
My selections,
