There has been considerable interest in suitable benchmarks for our portfolios and, of couse, this has focused on what may be called the 'official' or mainstream indices.
However what about the Signet Equity Index? It is used by those of us who are members of the Signet investors' groups, as it comprises UK equities without any weighting for market capitalisation and is now included by Sharescope.
Its performance graph can be very helpful as the FTSE 100 and 250 stocks carry no greater weighting than all the other UK stocks we can invest in.
Recent research has shown that there are now 70 times as many equity indices in the world as there are quoted stocks. I dare say one of them will be suitable.
