Good day,

As a private Canadian Investor, I keep a close eye on long term growth and solid investments, here are some of my January leaders:

You may want to take a closer look at these stocks and follow them:

TRP,AGU,MRU,BAM.A,ATD.B,DOL,DRT

And a few resource stocks:

AEM,NMX,ROG,

I will keep you posted on my top picks, please feel free to provide your comments and input.

Hi Thank you for your response Tournesol,

I am not familiar with MCT, however it seems to be well deversified with top quality holdings, I do not hold many Funds.
At this time and moving forwards you may want to look at the performance of Canadian banks, especially RY (RBC Royal Bank) TD (Toronto Dominion),BNS ( Bank of Nova Scotia). These banks are well positioned in the US market and traded on the NYSE. Take a look over last 3 years and they all offer dividends of close to 4%...any suggestions at your end, stay in touch ! Hi Gus,

Thank you for bringing up Ithaca looks good moving forward. I am more into ENB (Enbridge) SU ( Suncor) TRP and TA. You may want to look at these, especially TA (Transalta) which is on an upswing and delivers a good dividend...I like a good dividend!

I like a few Canadian companies. I hold Brookfield Asset Management and Canadian National and like (but do not hold) Canadian Pacific.

Both the Canadian rails are very high quality companies IMO, provided you accept the asset intensive nature of the railroad industry. CN has the best network in North America in my view, being the only carrier connecting three coasts (Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf of Mexico) and also bypassing the congested Chicago area via the track it acquired from the EJ&E in 2009. It also has a very balanced franchise, not being over dependent on any one commodity. Both Canadian rails have a big Canadian grain business, which is regulated, so there is risk there, but I see little prospect of either company not being a crucial part of the North American supply chain in 10 years time.

I also think Suncor and Imperial Oil could be interesting opportunities for the next 10+ years but haven't been able to get confident enough in the long run prospects of shale oil, so haven't bought any of their shares yet.

Good day Phil,
As to your choices Brookfield (TSE: BAM.A) and CNR are two bluechip stocks to keep. I do hold CNR and considering BAM, which is a top choice/recommendation for 2017 by many advisors.

As to canadian stocks (Oil and Pipelines) I like and hold TSE:TRP, TA and SU. Another to consider is IPL.

Nice to see Canadian stocks discussion entering the Stockopedia conversations. At the end of last year I extended my UK only access into Europe and US. I am experimenting with a mixed portfolio now and will be very interested to read about your Canadian experiences.

Hi Howard,
Nice to hear from our UK friends, my grandmother was British !

I will try to provide insight into some bluechip canadian stocks which I hold, I personnally hold most of te Canadian banks. They are recognized as solid banking organizations, well diversified in the US Market place and traded on the NYSE. The top five are RY,TD,BNS,CM,NA.
I will provide some information on some small CAP Canadian stocks that I hold and that I am also folllowing and tracking.

Hi Gilles, I currently hold TECK b shares which have done exceedingly well, so far. I am also interested in good dividend shares paying out above 10% pa paid monthly. Have you got anything in Canada?
The best I managed to get so far is from the US is CLM @ 18.6% & ORC @14.6%.
Today in the UK it is Burns night where bagpipes are played and people eat haggis which originates from Scotland and with whisky to wash it down with.

Do you watch the 700 club over there in Canada?

Thanks for posting this, I'm considering increasing my exposure to Canada but I don't have the Stockopedia region at the moment, I did add Europe a while ago.

I like the look of CN and have bought some.

Re Dollarama they seem a good defensive share to hold but what are their growth prospects like?

Have you looked at any other of the North American railroads? I too hold CNR (well I hold CNI, the New York quoted share, rather than the TSX one, but obviously that doesn't make any difference).

I also want to buy shares in Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific but don't hold any currently. UP is a bit expensive at the moment in my view so waiting for a pull back there.

As I say above, I do think CNR is the best of the North American railroads.

Incidentally, the sector has been a bit shaken up by the speculation surrounding Hunter Harrison (former CEO of both Canadian Pacific and Canadian National - his time at CP is arguably one of the greatest corporate turnarounds ever) taking some sort of board role at CSX.

Hi Phil,

No, I have not really looked into other railroads, CP looks good also but I'm just starting, so will not be looking for more railroads just yet. My aim is to diversify my portfolio into different areas of the world, it may not be the best time to do it now the £ has fallen, but looking for shares to hold for a long period. Yes I see CSX shares are up nearly 30% lately. I notice the dividends are quite low, is this a common feature with Canadian stocks?

I don't know about dividends on Canadian stocks generally but anecdotally in the sectors I follow (railroads being one of them), North American companies seem to do more share buybacks than European companies, so while the dividend is low the companies are returning a lot of capital via buyback. Lots has been written about whether buybacks or dividends are better, so I won't get into that debate myself!

OK I see. I prefer dividends now as I need the income, ok you can sell the shares I guess that costs money and is not worth it on small amounts.

Good afternoon,

As I mentioned earlier you should take a look at all canadian banks, they have all been on a run since last October, and most provide close to 4% in DIVD. They are all present in the US and more regulated than the US counterparts.
Also on the upswing with Trumps emphasis on energy independence you may want to look into these:: ENB,IPL,TRP,ALA,SU,

Any views on Trump's proposed tariffs? I'm reading Canada could benefit from the Mexico tariff as may increase oil exports from Canada to the US.

Hi Herbie,

No clarity yet on any tariffs, however I agree that Canada will be exporting much more oil to the US.
The Keystone Pipeline ( TRP _ Transcanada) blocked by Obama has been now accepted by Tump.
Just one example of increased delivery from CAN. to US.
