FWIW I've always thought of Smith & Nephew and SSL (bought this week by Reckitt Benckiser) as rather similar firms in some ways, both operating in the medical products space. I'm not sure of the extent to which that is true now though - is S&N vulnerable, for example, to govrnment spending cuts - and might that account for the recent weakness in the shares?
I've bought these and BBY today as they're on my watchlist and coming off highs. I can afford some more downside thanks to gains made on Dana.
The likes of Corin Group were taken over and I'm bound to say I've purchased Bby and SN because of their order books and stonking cash-flow. Moreover with the exchange rate still favourable to foreign predators I'd say both look tempting morsals for being takenover.

Should also add that I switched into BBY and SN because for the first time in 4 years I wanted to buy outside of the oil industry. I'd built and traded stakes in Abbot Group (sold when taken over) Premier (sold to fund Dana purchases), Dana and Soco.
I'm now left with Soco in my ISA bought at £11 and in my pension bought at £13 over the last couple of years. It seemed logical to move into BBY for its order book/dividend and into Smith & Nephew as the shares fell for its cashflow and quality of its products/ageing population.
For me diversifying at this stage having solely focused on 'oilies' seems a good move given I now have substantial downside protection in my portfolio and having bought SOCO at much lower prices.
