New episode of the podcast and by popular demand we look at some pharma stocks: #4D, #DNL, #ORPH, #TILS, plus lots of US stocks with a real focus on the EV scene and a discussion about shorting and when you should pay attention to it.

As ever, Apple can be a little slow to upload, not sure why!

Thanks Donald and Dave. Sound observations as usual. I bought more Tesla stock this week. Good to hear your views on shorting. Completely agree about spread betting on US stocks only. You can buy most large US companies for a 0.1% spread or less, whereas FTSE stocks under 1% spread are rare. Looking forward to next weeks talk. Could you look at Alibaba (BABA) if you have time?

Good podcast again. I used buzzsproat link and it worked really well, first time I’ve ever used them.

I agree about UK spreads, LoopUp (LON:LOOP) is not too bad, depends when you trade it but some are much worse.

Problem with US stocks is there is often forex charges, if you hold within an ISA, only 1 platform I know off does not charge fees but they don’t cover all US shares.

Thanks! I do find it ridiculous that so many listed companies have huge spreads and tiny market sizes. Unless you can buy or sell £10k with no more than a 2% spread then imo the market isn’t working. Also, being able to trade inside the spread is good, but wrong. AQY are presenting to Sharesoc this week and it will be interesting to hear what they say as they run a competitor exchange to the LSE focussed on improving a lot of these issues

The spread is often linked to market cap but some companies of the same size do have different spreads. The quoted spread, my understanding, is the highest and lowest price you can trade at with a normal volume trade, so you should be getting prices within that spread, I think it depends on your broker as well, how many market makers they use on that share. Spreads are often wider early morning and near close, because of less trading. Prices are a bit weird at times, I bought some Bioventix (LON:BVXP) on Friday, which had a spread of 4000-4100p, I actually bought for 4010p. No doubt my buy will show up as a sale, another anomaly, how accurate are the buy/sell volume figures that some traders use? I was looking at Luceco (LON:LUCE) the other day, huge buy volume one day recently, turns out that this was actually a huge director sale of 4m shares, no wonder the share price went down, I nearly bought some shares based on that incorrect information.
But I agree trading the US markets does seem much easier and is something I will be looking to do more of in the future, the issue is the forex fees.

Forex is a problem and so I prefer spread betting, where you just take the price and ignore the currency. On the subject of spreads I see Aquis £AQY announced today an incentive structure for market makers to increase market size and reduce spreads on shares listed on the Aquis Exchange. It is a commendable start, I just wish the LSE would try to do something to make the life of investors easier, but the LSE is, unfortunately, run solely for the benefit of high frequency traders imo, which is why so many PIs feel forced into looking elsewhere
