Executive Summary
In recent years the company has changed considerably. Historically, the company always had a strong focus on research and product development. However, this has always been biased towards the group's traditional activities in the ceramics, metals and glass industries. The acquisition of SaffilT? in 1999 brought a new range of technologies to the group, in particular the SaffilT? high performance chemical fibre that is now used to protect the monolithic block in catalytic converters for the automotive industry. A fledgling involvement in metal matrix composites for the automotive industry has been developed further and, following the acquisition of Millennium Materials Inc. in July 2001, the group now supplies metal matrix composite components to the electronics industry.
