It very much depends on one's lifestyle, whether the mortgage has been paid off, whether one has kids at private school(the fees are astronomical these days) and how one has one's wealth distributed.
I'd go out on a limb and say one could live perfectly comfortably with a million pounds,(outside of ones main asset, the house) invested wisely at 5-8%. Well, I'd be perfectly happy with that kind of income and it would be more than adequate - even better if it were to be ISA based :)

I'm sure one could live perfectly comfortably on a retirement income of £50-80k a year, bearing in mind that 90% of the UK's population live on less than ~£51k when they are working (http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=285) and that is while they still have mortages/rent to pay and more mouths to feed! Obviously, in the context of an investment forum the sums thought to be required are likely to be higher than in the world at large, but do not lose sight of the fact. I think that making that kind of money would not be "comfortable", more it would be "the good life" for a great many people in this country.
Looking forward to this article Tournesol, I love to read these types of opinions on here that are semi-reflective and explain the thought processes of the great investors on here (and TMF)...such as marben's post on how he manages his portfolio. It's all food for thought and can help shape options!
