As time moves on the evidence that omicron is a milder even if more contagious variant that will hopefully at last give us the heard immunity governments have been looking for it is worth looking at the data around deaths regarding age etc

Which proves it was only a big worry for the old deaths only really spiked up for those of 65+

Like I have said before we have scarified the young to protect the old

Personally I blame the media in big part for stoking up panic and fear which as always encourages politicians around the world to do something and to be seen to take control which brings back the phrase from Roland Reagan

Personally in a years time when 2022 finishes we will be talking about something else thank god China,Russia,booming inflation including rapidly rising commodity prices crypto currency’s will still be around too or maybe something totally different

Think you have hit the nail on the head government and media have stoked up so much fear in people that any questioning of the approach to covid is met by hysterical mudslinging by frightened little people

Your line about taped up playgrounds reminds me of taking my kids out to playground and finding it taped up so I took it all off took my kids in watched them play and laugh with in minutes other children came in and played too few people looked disapproving no one said anything

Your other point on not being able to visit dying relatives rings with me too I spent the last year watching my mum die and went from being able to see her regularly in a specialist heart hospital because she wasn’t expected to live and had been put in a room on her own

To when she stabilised not being able to see her for months in a care home and then once every other week as a named visitor she was a brave old girl never complained she was an ex nurse she knew the score

I knew she was going to die but still came as a shock when she passed

When it comes to 22 I’m excited to by the the recovery and investment case for 22 there are a lot of cheap shares out there especially in the resource area will be interesting to see if inflation continues at its current rate throughout 22

These views on Covid and the response to it can only be valid because they use an immense degree of hindsight- we are all going to be wiser after an event like this! Like them or not, government and societal reactions were never going to be predictable or necessarily correct in such turbulent times.

I don't think climbing on any lofty equestrian steeds is in any way useful.

My views were expressed at the time in here and elsewhere and remain quite consistent. I don't claim I was always correct I'm no denier of the danger of the bug but have always questioned any approach that was not focused on coping. On that basis I accepted the initial lockdown as a precaution against the unknown. As a new variant wave is now maybe going to cause us to shutdown to save 'our NHS' for a 4th time as it evades the vaccination barrier its clear we've not spent our time well or sought to learn much about how we cope with this problem. This is due to our collective hysteria.

Of course we are all full of hindsight. Shame that we didn't use some hindsight before now to plan for a problem we knew would come. Not the exact shape of omicron but we could get enough of an idea. Fear and hysteria is making idiots of us. Hammer and dance is nothing but collective hysteria veering between panic and release.

The harm we cause ourselves immense. The non immediate covid problems we accumulate are far more dangerous than the bug for most of us. Like sheeple we swallow the fear and Cyclops policy/urge of lock downs and line up for another experimental jab (factually it is)...that has severely under reported negatives such as myocarditis (particularly prevalent in otherwise healthy young men/boys post puberty) and a high number of deaths post jab that would get any other medicine pulled before now. I'm not anti vax in any way...general anti vaxxers are wing nuts. But I'm going to take a lot of persuading that having had covid pre vaccines and now having had 3 doses I should be lining up in 6 months time for the new formulation.

And hindsight warriors like you are so brilliant at making it seem normal that a vaccine came along a released us so quickly to periods of normality rather than rolling permanent lock down and temporary release. The more unbiased assumptions would have been that vaccine would have taken a couple of years more at least....so our policy of panic lockdown was an unsustainable madness....yet here we are again at that sort of madness.

Doctored data, partial data, sketchy models that aren't verifiable, scary "exponentials"...ffs...lets get a grip. I'm not a conspiracy theorist...I'm just amazed at how we allow hysteria to overrun us. Boris must have nightmares about scary exponential out to get him (he's clearly mathematically and scientifically clueless so they know how to scare him easy with it). Most in hospital with covid catch it in hospital (acutely so in the epicentres of western panic Bergamo and Brooklyn). Transmission is greatest in the home where the same people spend extended time with each other. Safe and known drugs are available to reduce some of the dangerous symptoms of covid particularly if used early but we have not done this instead leaving people untreated at home for 10 days until they are so sick they need to come in to hospital (this is such an insanity!). Hysteria prevents us from systematic coping

You are a willing tool of the fear mongers. You've lost your mind and reason. And people like you are why we can't see our way through a severe but manageable problem. You lot have got no backbone. You get such a response from me due to the sanctimonious and moralising one you sent me. Covid is a problem not a moral issue.

When the madness is over we can all look back and laugh...and hopefully severely reprimand ourselves.

Hopefully I’m wrong, but I don’t think Covid and further restrictions are over yet, it was only 6 – 8 weeks ago that the new variant wasn’t on the radar, then the government 2 weeks ago told people to work from home and I saw London become a ghost town again, when many retailers and hospitality business, were preparing for their peak trading.

Also feel the NHS and many businesses are straining to cope with the number of employees isolating, this will impact over the next few months, with over 100k of people per day testing positive and therefore having to isolate.

Maybe after the winter things will get back to normal, but until then see the next few months as being choppy / very uncertain, but hopefully some good buying opportunities.

As for the economy, I don’t think these lockdowns have been all bad, some businesses have thrived, some have become more resilient and had to adapt to survive, on the flip side a number of businesses have been brought to an end faster.

Okay. I too have had enough here in this thread. The discussion and points re covid are clearly very relevant to investment. If we can't discuss them without having a huff or getting offended...well then we aren't very good investors. By all means be annoyed tho. As I said above, covid is a problem not a moral issue. My view might be wrong and it has been in the past on covid as there is so much uncertainty....as well as criminally poor disclosure from our in nerve jangled emergency mode govts. I look forward to MPs, public and media dissecting the history of covid and IMO tearing western govts a new one for many reasons. It is very obvious we are entering that trajectory now...see fury at covert drinks as example 'when people were dying alone'. The dying alone is terrible and inhuman....we've always really known that and its one of the reasons our look back anger will be so fierce (self hate!).

Its beyond me why someone (looking at you jacko) would think only the madness of reddit, twitter is a place for this.

All true and sensible points. I disagree though in that once we feel sure omicron is not that bad (my bias) I think it will be politically impossible to slow the non scared part of the populations from going about normal life.

The NHS not coping will rapidly be seen as a separate issue. Businesses will cope...as they got no other choice, particularly if Sunak isn't going to dig deep

that’s the thing in a free society you can’t control a virus all you do is kick the can down the road

Not entirely true, but even if it is, kicking cans down roads can be very useful at times. It's already reduced deaths massively by keeping infections under control while vaccines were developed and delivered. And also by keeping loads on health services manageable, so we didn't see lots of people dying through no access to ventilators or even basic medical care in previous peaks, as could have happened - and did in many countries.

There are already updated vaccines under development, kicking the can down the road now allows more time for their development and (hopefully) keep loads on health service manageable. It's yet to be seen if current measures in England will be sufficient for that, but even the current half hearted ones help.

And in terms of costs, it's no accident that the countries that kept infection rates lower suffered less economic damage than those, like the UK, that didn't. The idea that removing restrictions will reduce economic damage is a myth. The costs of healthcare, lost working time, sensible caution by those wanting to avoid infection and the risks that go with it, don't disappear if restrictions are removed - they get more serious.

After a break of a few days I was somewhat bemused to find my last comment removed struggle to see how it is any more provocative than many of the other posts below and I stand by what I said in it

Maybe if you are going to single out one post the least the person responsible for removing it could do is to contact the poster concerned

If you are going to have moderators they should be impartial and not take sides

I will not comment further as people seem to love giving it out but don’t like getting anything back
