Mobile messaging specialist Synchronica Plc (LON:SYNC) this morning reported that a Latin American mobile operator with 20m subscribers had launched the company’s low-cost MessagePhone. The handset is bundled with Synchronica Mobile Gateway and a mobile instant messaging service using technology that was acquired by Synchronica from Colibria in April 2010.

Synchronica and Korean device manufacturer KC Mobile launched the MessagePhone in February 2010 as a low-cost messaging-oriented handset optimised for use with Synchronica Mobile Gateway, providing affordable push email, synchronisation and mobile instant messaging services. MessagePhone also provides the user with a full HTML web browser and access to many popular social networking sites.

As part of today’s move, the operator, which is a subsidiary of one of the region's largest mobile operator groups, launched MessagePhone simultaneously with the Synchronica instant messaging service which is also made available to a wide range of third party handsets. Combined, the services will play an important part in allowing the operator to expand its current portfolio of messaging products with an innovative end-to-end solution. MessagePhone services are offered at less than US$15 per month to the subscriber. The launch will be supported by a mass-market advertising campaign targeted at consumer and business users.

Carsten Brinkschulte, Synchronica's chief executive, said: “With a growing customer base that desires cutting-edge services, Latin America is one of our most exciting markets. Many subscribers in the region do not have access to fixed-internet services and instead rely on their mobile phones for online communications. The launch of the MessagePhone, which is powered by our award winning Mobile Gateway and Instant Messaging service, will cost-effectively satisfy this demand.”
