For the March 2012 “>20%” monthly oil stock competitions, which oil stocks will have the greatest move for

(i) >20% gain?
(ii) >20% loss?

You may enter two stocks, one for (i) and one for (ii). More than one person may enter the same stock. The deadline for the March competition is midnight on Wednesday 29 February 2012.

No shortage of candidates for the up side, even including companies that have seen a very strong up move recently! ......

....but I'll stick my neck out and suggest that Cove Energy (LON:COV) will see +20% in March (assuming no new bid action before close of play on Wednesday). I doubt that would be the top performer* though.

And, sticking to the controversial, I'll go for Borders And Southern Petroleum (LON:BOR) on the down 20%, given that well news should be due.

* I have other hopes, but don't want to bore ;-)

GKP for the +20% for me this month. A significant proportion of the bubble has evaporated recently
(currently @ 334p/sh)

For the 20% down, has to be one of PMG (the usual suspect defying gravity still) or , similar to EE, BOR on drill result disappoint. Southern Falklands has consistently disappointed unlike up north where RKH has been drilling.

BOR for the down for me.

Aminex (AEX) for +20% please. The market was underwhelmed by yesterday's discovery at Ntorya-1 RNS but with the well now being deepened by another 250 metres I think there is massive scope for further good news during March.

Retreating GKP could easily bounce if the PI following can generate a new frenzy, while PCI has only just risen to 9.9p, it's Algerian assets alone are worth about 15p even without its Kurdi (and Italian) prospects, and taking a pause at 29p SQZ remains a sitting duck, TRAP may squeeze in a result on its Orchid well. On the Canadian market SLG (and Valiant) are drilling Cladhan South with Romania is getting more attention, WZR drilling continues patiently in Kurdistan, and CEO could complete its poke at Bua Ban South. And there's AEX.......we hope!

Really its endless. Springs here: the sector's coming out of hibernation. So bearing in mind the date of March 14th, I'm going to go for that sleeping giant in Vietnam, who's recently began to show signs of awakening.

Toroa was drilled in the Southern blocks and disappointed. However, I'm not sure that can really count as "consistent"! And it's a pretty different play than the deep water wells planned now.

AEX for >20% please.

Unlike some I don't read the RNS as a sort of overpromise underdeliver to prop up the share price for all sorts of nefarious reasons. If one takes it at face value, and looks at it if anything from an underpromise overdeliver point of view for all the right shareholder reasons, this is a bargain opportunity.

So who do believe, the sceptics or those who are giving this one last opportunity to deliver? I have studied this share for years, and my judgement is to back the new CEO to deliver.

My money is where my mouth is, and although I seem to be in the minority am keeping the faith. By the end of March we will know who is right, one way or the other.

FOGL for the >20% down. Not that I want it, but if I do lose money at least I will have done well in the comp!

Hi Flying,

Indeed, poor use of words there.

I meant consistently disappointed on the news front compared to Rockhopper - there has only been one disappointing drill, Toroa as Peterg mentioned.

Additionally the optimism, well founded, seems to always focus on the Northern areas as well with southern explorers such as Borders & Southern, Fogl seen as far riskier plays than RKH.

Nor am I expecting any further drilling in Southern waters to yield much joy personally. Just my opinion as, despite looking at RKH, DES and their ilk, have not invested in any Falklands Oily.

Well, what a fun month Feb has proved to be... bids, counterbids, pulled bids, rumours etc etc...

For March, I will go with AEX. If we get a result from the deepening then its a very very strong story going forward. If we get a fail then AEX will be very well worth watching IMO.

What has amazed me is that no one has really given any thought as to what SD will do now that he has got his feet under the table. A very highly respected manager and an interesting link to the Chinese. The desireof the Chinese to get involved in Africa is well known, heck, just take a look at the planned pipeline to Dar - all financed and built by the Chinese. So does anyone really think that our new investor is content to just sit there with a small position? No, to me the obvious read is that they see SD and AEX as being a great vehicle to use to expand their African adventures.

Another possiblity for me was DEO - weve been out of DEO fora long time now since there was no point going near it until we had some evidence that the funding market was easing up. Interesting to note, therefore, the announcement from Canadian listed Iona (all N Sea assets) that they have signed a $130m RBL andfiled a $60-80m equity offering. So, funding seems to be opening up (Iona's got c 17m 2P across several fields)....could be very positive for those held back by similar access to funding concenrs (either for development or explo) such as DEO, NPE SLG etc etc.

OPHR for the 20% up for me please, hoping for a repeat of COV. Although SIA should do well, I think a lot of the upside is already in the price.

I'll go for:

Genel Energy (LON:GENL) for the up - on excitement caused by ratification of Kurdistan licences for majors like Exxon.

Aminex (LON:AEX) for the down as it dawns that there isn't enough gas doon there (this is a double bluff as I hold...!)

For >20% Up Competition, RMP really stands out this month with a mouth watering 137% rise
and the Puntlands drilling has not even reached target yet. Congratulations to
Highcommissioner!!!

For >20% Down competition, GKP ran into a buffer in month and lost almost 25%.
Congratulations to quite a few people (Oblomof, Proselenes, Kamose, Blue32, Oilyrag,
Des12345, TombTrader, Fr365, TheYard and Kuronagi)!!!
