Mello is coming to London!

Responding to demand from investors for a more London-centric event following our big events in Derby and Hever, we are delighted to launch our next event, ‘Mello London’ which will be held on Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th November. Our hosts for the event will be the Clayton Hotel Chiswick, located in the heart of West London W4, a newly refurbished 4-star hotel offering 8 purpose-built, state-of-the-art meetings and events spaces.

We have kept to the winning formula: created by investors for investors, Mello London will offer access to high quality growth companies (small and mid-cap), new workshops and panel sessions and the very popular outstanding keynote speakers that Mello is renowned for. Just like Mello 2018 & Mello South, it is going to be a fantastic opportunity to see old friends, make new friends and network with like-minded private investors and nearly all delegates will be there for both days so Chiswick will be buzzing and we shall have entertainment laid on in the evenings.

On Monday, you will be able to hear from small cap FT columnist, and private investor 'hero' Lord John Lee & Gervais Williams who is a published author and Managing Director of Miton Group plc. On Tuesday we will be joined by founder of Sanford DeLand Asset Management's Keith Ashworth-Lord, Judith MacKenzie of Downing LLP who will be able to share 18 years worth of small-cap experience and author Glen Arnold, FT writer& former professor of investing, will be discussing Warren Buffett's mistakes and Ben Graham's Investing.

Plus, Stockopedia’s Paul Scott and Graham Neary will be discussing the morning news in their ever popular SmallCap Stock Report session and also leading a workshop on improving your accounting skills.

Sounds like one not to miss. Will there be a suitably diverse menu & what is the cost of this ?

Yes a very diverse menu and it is pretty much high end pub fayre so total cost for each person not likely to be more than £25 if going for three courses and £20 for two

Tips on the two day

Most of the theatre sessions and some of the company presentations in the PI World room will be filmed and available after the event so try to spend most of your time seeing companies and presentations that are not being recorded unless the company is specifically on your must see list.

Harriman House will have an extensive investment themed bookstand so you can buy books at the show and many authors will be there if you want them signed.

There are numerous presentations involving writers on Stockopedia so do enjoy those. The full two day programme is now available to download...

The Clayton venue is very close to Gunnersbury station so no need to bring a car. Try to get there early on the Monday morning as 600 people being checked in will take a lot of time

May I express my thanks to all of you who supported and attended this event especially as nearly one third of the delegates bought tickets through Stockopedia.

The quality of the speakers as noted in the many reports available to read about the event was superb and the companies also attracted full rooms for their presentations. We had quality running all the way through both days...so onwards to the next event and please keep the week beginning 13th May 2019 free in your diaries with news to follow shortly.

The quality of speakers was very impressive & it was again time well spent.

Also, the venue was good. The layout & room sizes seemed to work well. Also a nice choice of nearby accommodation from cheap Travel lodges up to whatever people want to pay.

Yes it was a very good venue but the 1000 or so Mello regulars will decide where we go for the next one. We like to keep everyone engaged and able to share in the decision making. This thread will be useful if any of those who attended would like to add their thoughts and comments and certainly mention any ideas for improvement....we never sit back on what we already have and each event will be a little different.

A great two days many thanks. Quality, pace, variety, logistics, venue and ambience were all 'beyond my expectations'.

One small point I would offer about your thoughts for the next one.

I noted that in every 'small room' session I attended more than 10 over the two days. That all seats were filled and several people were standing (a great accolade to you and the event).

I would suggest therefore, that for your next one you should not be at all modest in thinking about a venue with larger presentation rooms. I'm sure you will easily fill them.

A bonus to thinking about this, might be that it also offers a marketing incentive for companies to attend and present. As you would be offering them the opportunity to connect with an even larger, highly interested potential investor community, for them to talk to.

It would seem to be a win, win, to me.

Just a thought.

A word of caution on this "improvement", if I may. 30 people in a room that takes 25 = buzzing. The same 30 in a room that seats 100 feels flat. So I think the current arrangements work perfectly.

I think Jon has got it spot on and to be honest our biggest challenge was the schedule and pitching companies up against each other and then getting each in the right sized presentation room plus about a third were being filmed so we need to get them in the right room as well.

The presentation rooms held about 90 in the largest down to 30 in the smallest....We still had a queue outside for three of the companies in the biggest room but generally ALL rooms including the 140 seater main theatre were full and buzzing. There is nothing worse than have just a dozen in a room that holds 90.

We cannot get it 100% right but I think in that respect we were very close and not a single company has complained about room size indeed we offered a couple a bonus second session if they filled a smaller room first time round. We do our best to keep everyone happy for sure.

The room sizing was excellent compared to Derby (including even the main room where I don't think that anybody that wished to attend was unable too) - A great all round job and a huge thank you to David and all others involved.

It is almost certain that the next one will be on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th May....now all that needs to be decided is where we hold it ?

Thank you for an excellent and enjoyable Mello London.

My preference for the May event would be for somewhere not in London, but with good transport links from around the country. There is a Clayton Hotel in Birmingham which looks pretty central for example. Maybe worth looking at?

In my opinion the Derby venue was okay but it would be good to try somewhere different next year.

We have looked at almost a hundred venues over the past few years and I can tell you that the Clayton in Birmingham is wonderful as a space for an event that is smaller and needs boardroom style facilities but not theatre style presentation rooms. All their smaller rooms have a permanent boardroom table so it just does not work. It would be great for a ShareSoc seminar though so will work on that as an option.

Hi,

I'd like to attend the next (or a future) one and l live in Gloucestershire, so Bristol would be a great alternative location to London for me. I have travelled to London a lot for investment events, and I can see the attraction of hosting in the main financial city, but somewhere non-central with loads of parking would be nice. Midlands is also a great option.

Bristol is probably too high risk as transport links are good but too far into the South West.....We may consider Birmingham which like Derby is reasonably central in the country and has good transport links including a good international airport as 5% of our attendees actually fly in to the event.
