Not sure if anyone else has received anything but this is the first time I've received a internal stockopedia mail
purporting to be from someone who has found me on .askmefast.com ( a website I have never heard of let alone used)

"Hello,
My name is Joy, i got you from .askmefast.com and i want to have a
good relationship with you, please i need your cooperation,contact me with my email adress,
(joymabou13@yahoo.com )
am yours Joy.

My first thoughts are "Nigerian spam"

Don't suppose there is anyway to curtail such internal stockopedia mail is there?

Sorry to all, this was a spammer. We've now banned them - thanks for alerting us. We'll try to figure out a way to prevent this kind of thing happening in future, although it's not easy unfortunately.

Yup, can confirm I've received the same thing. I've informed the S'pedia admins. Hopefully they'll be able to take measures to block in future.

You may have to use "captchas" to prevent bots from signing up to the site.

The attack is a sign of sucess in getting recognition for the site, I suppose. :0)

Ah ha. So it was a spammer. Naughty naughty Joy. :)

Appreciate it will be tough to to prevent this going forward but thanks for the quick response Murakami.

Talking of spam, if any readers have a spare moment, I seem to have attracted one that fills my junk mail box with 4-7 messages a day, covering such topics as Refinance today, Test drive a ford, Get rid of timeshares, Meet Christian singles..blah blah. So I've engaged in reciprocity-, signing them up for as much junk mail as I can find.

In case any of you have a spare moment and want to assist.

I'd be wary of getting involved in that kind of thing Fangorm.

Often the spammers "from" address is merely another person's hijacked address or similar fronting of a legitimate address.

The first you might find out that your address is being copied is when you get hundreds of "Mailer Daemon: Recipient Address Not Valid" emails arriving in your inbox.

I see your point but surely the hacked person's address would see the outbox and contact me to let me know they've been hacked. I'm certainly not going to take this incessant spamming lying down that's for sure. Any suggestions as to how I can rid myself of this pest?

They had an Unsubscribe link, which, after a week of constant spamming, I clicked. The spam continued so I sent them a polite request to take me off.They haven't...................so now it's war.

Fangorn - clicking an unsubcribe link to a spam email isn't a good idea as it confirms your address. If they all come from one address, can you not just add them to your blocked senders list? They shouldn't even reach your junk mail folder after that.

Yes Ext - it wasn't , on reflection a good move to click unsubscribe. But then such a link has worked on several other unwanted emails.. Will add them to blocked senders list, which is quite lengthy.

Never been one to turn the other cheek when it comes to things like this...but you're right, easier to just block and do something else.

Rec'd the same msge as your opener. I've junked it (thought initially it was bonafide, as several people post off-board) and hope that's the end of it.

Agree it would be nice to have some means (safe) of turning the tables.......

I'd rather stockopedia just ignore it to be honest.

"capchas" just create further problems.

His/her subscription needs to be cancelled pronto.

There is a real Sgt. Leigh Ann Hester, a highly decorated US soldier but there are also several links online referring to African crooks using her name and photo to scam people.

I find it both puzzling and worrying that these messages have been sent to us internally through Stockopedia's subscriber messaging system.

I can't imagine that these scammers would be paying money to actually become subscribers of Stockopedia so I really do need to ask you:

1. How did they apparently get in to the Stockopedia system?

2. Has our personal information been compromised?

Hi Jane

As I recall, I received and sent genuine internal messages before I ever subscribed for anything, so I think anyone can register and send such messages. But if you want a fast response probably better to contact Ed and co directly, they've always been quicker to respond on that channel than through messages posted on discussion threads.

Sorry about the spam messages. There were about 20 sent before we cut off the user's access.

Let me reassure you that no personal details have been compromised, these messages were sent directly via the internal Stockopedia messaging system. It's happened only on the site, but unfortunately our notification system passed them onto each recipient's email before we caught it.

Dealing with spam is an ongoing battle and we do do our best to battle it on a daily basis. Please be reassured that I'm taking action to ensure this particular spam type isn't delivered again.

The site was as a community & content site before the subscription service was launched in 2012. The messaging system allows free or paying active site members to message each other. I will introduce an internal trust based system to ensure spammers can't access it and I'm considering making it subscriber only.

Please leave it with me and I'll make some improvements.

Thank you for your reply.

Should you decide not to make the messaging a "paying subscriber only" service, then perhaps you could provide a button allowing paying subscribers to opt to receive messages only from other paying subscribers or to opt out from the messaging service altogether?

Yes I do agree Jane. I've just released some improvements to the site with a new and improved spam filter added. The support team will also be instantly notified if any suspicious messages are being attempted to be sent.

Paul Scott received an amorous message from Leigh Ann Hester ... it's a shame to cut him off from his admirers... but it's the only sensible thing to do !!!
