I am a full-time private investor... with a little trading on the side (generally small-scale arbitrage in specialist niches). Previously, I spent 24 years in the IT industry, 13 of those running my own IT services firm. I invested as a "hobby" for 20 years before turning it into a full-time occupation in 2004. I really enjoy the "research" side of investing, finding out about varied businesses and industries and learning what makes them tick. Since going "full-time" I have learnt an awful lot from some very erudite investors & professionals who are kind enough to share their expertise in electronc forums such as this. I can now count a number of them as my friends, having had the opportunity to meet them in the real world, as well as this virtual one! I try to pay back the debt I owe by sharing what I've learnt and I always value constructive criticism to correct my errors and misapprehensions! I am a Director of ShareSoc, the UK organisation for individual shareholders. See below for details. more »
Thx for the replies & clarification.
The only event I've got down for next week is Touchstone Group 's EGM on Monday 19th, at which it is proposed that the company delists from AIM and makes a partial tender offer to shareholders. Details are set out in this circular .
I do not intend to attend this meeting, as I attended their AGM this Monday, together with TMF's carmensfella and Aliceinwonder1. Suffice to say, I was neither impressed by the performance of TSE's management (family interests owning a large propertion of the stock), both at the meeting and as reflected in results, nor by their proposal to delist at the bottom of the market and make what I* consider a derisory tender offer to independent s/hs.
*It seem that TSE's management acknowledge that the offer doesn't represent fair value as they say in the circular:
the Directors believe that the current share price fails to adequately value the underlying Group operations and have little confidence that the underlying value of Group operations will be fully appreciated whilst the Company retains its AIM Admission.
Fortunately, I only have a token holding in the company, for monitoring purposes.
Regards,
Mark
I'd just like to highlight a writeup of presentations given by Judges Capital and Maxima Hldgs Plc that I've posted on TMF (out of respect to Carmensfella, the organiser). I highly recommend the Mello events (which are usually held on third Monday of each month) and will try to remember to post a reminder and details here in future.
Regards,
Mark
Just one event I've got on my list for next week: the Oilbarrel Conference on 28th October.
Looking forward to seeing presentations from:
For anyone not familiar with these events, they are always well attended and you are likely to meet a number of posters from here and from other BBs. If you can spare the time, a great opportunity to listen to presentations and quiz the directors of oil companies you might either have an investment in, or that might be worth assessing as potential investment candidates.
Hope to see you there!
Mark
Whilst not strictly a company presentation event, let's not forget there is also the World Money Show at the QEII Centre in Westminster occurring next Fri/Sat 30/31 October which Murakami flagged up here and which can be seen on numerous banner ads around the site.
Ed (Promethean) is scheduled to speak at 5pm Saturday on the issue of "Power to the People: Private Investors in a Digital Age". The complete schedule can be seen here including a keynote speech by John Authers of the FT on Friday.
I have registered to attend (on Saturday) and hope to meet others there as well as the Stockopedia team.
Also, I noticed in an article on The Motley Fool that the National Investment Club Conference 2009 is taking place on Saturday 30th at the QEII, for those with an interest in starting an investment club, and the schedule has an investment club slant on the Saturday, though not exclusively.

Just FYI, for those planning to attend the World Money Show on either Friday or Saturday, we are planning to run a variant of the Stockopedia Fund Challenge, which should be quite fun/interesting. More details on that at the show itself!
If you can make it, we'd love to see you, so please come along if you're around. You can register for FREE by clicking here. We'd welcome the support for our first show!!
Re #7: Posts/threads relating to Aminex and BPC at the Oilbarrel conference can be found here: http://www.stockopedia.com/forum/view/32809/oilbarrel-presentation-281009 and here: http://www.stockopedia.com/forum/view/32823/bpc-oil-in-the-sunshine
In response to Rob's query re Central Petroleum (ASX:CTP) on the Aminex thread, I'm afraid I wasn't overly impressed. ISTM that huge CAPEX is required to turn their prospective projects into viable ones. A quoted GTL CAPEX of $75k/bpd of production, though reasonable, doesn't look hugely attractive to me. That's equivalent to paying $7.5m for a well & infrastructure to produce 100bopd of oil. I think there are companies offering considerably more attractive returns than that. I formed the impression that CTP were trying to spread meagre resources over a huge area, rather than focussing on any one prospect with near-term potential.
If anyone wants to discuss CTP further, please start a separate thread.
[edit]Ooops! I see a thread for CTP has been created... I'll copy my comments there.

Mark
I only have one date in my diary for next week: the Indigovision Group AGM, in Edinburgh on Wednesday 4th November. 'fraid I won't be attending that one, having attended a post-results briefing from them in London.

Mark

"Sea Salt" (formerly Mello) is directly opposite the station exit onto Southend Road (opposite Waitrose), on the north side of the railway bridge. Address: 2 Southend Road, BR3 2SD. People start arriving between 6:30 and 7:00pm.
I highly recommend these events, not just for the presentation but as a great opportunity to meet and chat with fellow investors.

Next week, I have the AGM for Ceres Power Hldgs , the fuel cell company, in my diary at 10:30 on 4th December. Their recent placing announcement came as a bit of a surprise, considering that they still have £23m in the bank...
Cheers,
Mark
