In the comment section at the end of this article, some posters speculate that the accuracy of this rapid test is 85%. That compares with Novacyt's claim of 100% accuracy of their tests. A very rapid but less accurate test might be useful in some situations, such as at airports, but not so useful in other situations in which people may be prepared to wait longer for more accurate results. So I suspect that there will be markets for both categories of tests over the few years.
There's "ready", and then there's independent testing to validate the accuracy of the test. Then they've got to scale it up.
But yes, definitely a potential disruptor.
I would be amazed if this was the only serious competition out there. In the medium to long term it may well become a low cost commodity item supported by Marketing to drive product differentiation and premium pricing. Novacyt already appear to have a proven batch testing product capable of 14 tests an hour. A 30 test upgrade is coming to the market very soon. how long before a 62 and then a 126.
Logistically, how would a 30 second test work? How would it be administered? Who would oversee it?
I think there is a long road in front of us before we get to any form of self certified mass testing.
My bigger concern would be Novacyte scaling up rather than immediate competition concerns.
