September is a historically bad month for US markets and, it would seem, the UK too.
My portfolio of long-term holds is confirming this trend, currently -3.1% for September, which, if it were to stay this way until month-end, would be my 2nd-worse month in the last 20 months. Most positions seem to be selling off for no obvious reason.
Just interested to know if others are finding the same... has September been a bad month so far?
Yes I’m finding the same, most of my folios are down around 5%, NAPs is about the same. But first half of July was also bad but then recovered.
Since May it’s been a struggle.
My 11 year portfolio shows June as the worst month and September as the fourth worst month. I have only one small profitable June. There always seems to be a sell off in June. Currently down 1.7% for September.
Most of my holdings have performed largely as you've described but overall it's been an excellent month so far largely owing to 2 of my current 3 largest positions breaking higher, indeed I even highlighted on Stocko when I added to both of these last month. Solgold (LON:SOLG) around 25p & $AMTX at the 10-8$ area.
Hi BT, in my view markets tend to sell off when volume is lighter. Nothing unusual in that- for me my portfolio (mixed bag of stocks, ETCs and Fund holdings) is down about 2%, The run-up to Xmas from here will be interesting tho I reckon.
October could be interesting wit furlough ending and VAT changing in some sectors.
Of course Covid has not gone away.
I've had my "balls felt".
August 16th, reached a peak value record.
September 16th, 9.2% off my peak high of 30 days back.
The main problem are Sylvania Platinum (LON:SLP) and Tharisa (LON:THS) - precious metals (and a large position) has plummeted. I'm about 30% down and £52K on paper.
I am hoping sitting this out calmly is the logical play.
When I'm on a losing streak and I still believe my original investment case, I top up in to the new lows and so I've thrown my Invoices-received and Tax-Due-Dec31st fund into this "Special Situation". Its still falling...
It will all be different in January and 2022 Q1.

Yes, September is historically the worst month, and May, June, and July are underperforming while December is the best month. February, March, October, and November are not bad midding mouths.
Twice a year I take profits,( sell 50% of the top five positions) and cut losses, ( sell bottom five losses-making positions) I normally have 30 to 70 open positions at any one time. I do this culling at the end of August and the end of April every year. I do not buy and new share this mouth only "pyramid" buys
It works for me.
Up 2.5% today... crazy.

By doing nothing, I have recovered 3.7%.
True to form, September has been an absolute dog., for both the indexes and my own portfolio. Very frustrating.
From a traders (non investor) experience - Sept has been a positive month.
Had some good movement on INDV, happy with my recent RDSB purchase as my SL is in profit, a fun profitable two day folly with CINE a week adventure with TRST, kicked myself for not picking up RR and said goodbye to my final money tree tranche at AHT.
Saying that Sept markets are telling me to be careful and have both CPI and RWI not racing with my finger on the ready to cut button and thinking about holding off on new purchases (though the market itself dictates my sales and purchases) .
I no longer invest though I did cut my 'investment' in VOO purchased in May last year.
If I may ask Breakout Trader how have your breakout trading been over the past month and are you a breakout trader or/and investor. For me personally I have stopped investing and focus now fully on trading listening to charts and markets and less on tips and company sponsored news.

For me, its been a piss poor October on top of a poor September.
We've gone no where so far.
Worst of all, my soul mate and closest friend died 17 days ago. Absolute heartbreak. I don't care about money or things. I'd give it all away to have that person alive and well again.
What has hit me is a big drop in Xlmedia (LON:XLM), minor weakness in International Personal Finance (LON:IPF), Ig Group (LON:IGG), and Scs (LON:SCS) .
To the rescue I am seeing pick up in Evraz (LON:EVR), Centamin (LON:CEY), Tharisa (LON:THS) and Sylvania Platinum (LON:SLP) .
Also, some healthy dividends have flowed in... and then out to The HMRC to cover some tax bills.
Hopefully we will turn the bear quarter.
