Re Investment Recovery Services Ltd mentioned under the Grant Thornton heading. I've had several letters from IRS over the years in relation to failed private company/EIS investments (failure goes with the territory!). Generally all they offer is to claim EIS relief/ Entrepreneur's relief on the holding. They charge a fee for this (probably as a % of the recovery) while if you're clued up enough to do this yourself, or use a half-competent tax adviser, you'll get the relief anyway (and you should get a choice of IT or CGT relief in some cases). I think IRS simply trawl the share registers of failed companies, match names to databases and send out letters. 'Mostly harmless' I'd say, though I wonder if they're breaching GDPR now.

Thanks for the background on IRS and we would generally agree that, in the vast majority of cases, investors should be able to claim relief on such investments without the need to use a specialist claims company.
