Starting with Stockopeadia. Several key questions...

Hi all, I’m still on the trial version and really enjoying Stockopeadia. I have been using Trading 212 since around June this year. So I found I cannot import anything direct from 212. I’ve labouriosly entered all of my current positions, dates, prices, quantity etc. But after all that I find things are not adding up at all! Also does Stockopeadia change the dollar value of American to pounds? I can’t find information about this.

Another problem I have is how to input the deposits I’ve made. Do I have to go into the history and input every deposit and withdrawal?

This all seems such a long drawn out and ultimately unrewarding process so far. Any suggestions I would be grateful for, short of closing all my position, withdrawing all the funds and then starting all over again! How did everyone else manage???

I might shed some light on the first part of your question. I'm taking it that you are using a folio to input your positions into, if you go to settings on the top right of the page you will see last price or bid price. When I changed it to bid price the valuations pretty much fell into line with my broker valuations.

If you've got fractional shares you won't be able to get the same quantity precision in stockopedia, so you'll get rounding differences. It does handle currency dollar to pence conversions but you have to enter the conversion factor on a buy or sell. When I came to stockopedia I just entered my current positions at the then current date with prices carried forward from elsewhere, as buys but without any tax charges. I just entered a single deposit transaction to cover the total value of the shares. So I didn't need to go back through my full stockbroker history of buys and sells, deposits and withdrawals.

If you get a lot of dividends which you might if you use some features on Trading212 then it might be a nuisance to enter transactions for them all in stockopedia. I don't bother I just enter adjustment deposits every so often to make sure dividends are covered. For small values from dividends on Trading212 I just invest them all in one equity, a particular investment trust. I don't record this one on stockopedia - too much effort and so many high precision fractions would be a nuisance as rounding could add up to big differences.

Thanks so much for that comprehensive and very useful information stehuk. That all all makes so much sense. That is so very useful to me and I really appreciate you taking the time to answer so fully. I’ve gone through all of my positions, deleted one at a time and then input the ticker, quantity and amount originally bought then the price per share is automatically calculated. It’s much better, however it persistently says the total gain is £21 more than it actually is. Oh well I’m getting there slowly, steep learning curve though. Thanks again.

Thanks very much for the tip Andy. I only wish the Stockopedia YouTube videos would tell us things like this instead of coming over so slick. It would help so much especially for us neophytes.

I do the same as stehuk below and just enter dividend payments as an occasional deposits to keep the total correct. I know the guys from Stocko are working on the portfolio feature - is it so difficult to auto add dividends - I would love to be able to see how much I am earning from each position without having to go back to my spreadsheet to find out...

Very much agree with you Phuntt. At the current price of the Stockopedia subscription I would take it as a given that it would have been already a feature. Surely it’s a simple calculation to work out the dividend? Hopefully the facility will be coming soon.

Thanks very much for the enlightenment Andy, my Stocko's toolbox is very much under-used. In this case I have been trying for ages to reconcile Stocko's valuation total with my broker's and now I have made the necessary adjustment I'm looking forward to next Friday's round-up.

I use Excel spreadsheets, one file for each branch, as many sheets as necessary in each file. I think of the sheets as being the leaves on a tree, the branches joining to the trunk which is the folder. I can tell you exactly the dividends paid out and by whom in all my investments since 2011 when I changed from cash bonds to equities. It's just one sheet of several in a file that looks after similar concerns. One sheet being the cash balance in my broker accounts, when the balances build up they get re-invested somewhere. Another sheet displays the dividend record and payment dates due and their past. What's not to like or is this too simple?

On a different theme, how reliable are all the figures Stockopedia provide for every share?

It’s incredible that Golden Prospect Subscription shares get a stock rank of 92, and a mass of figures and greens etc......yet this is just an Investment Trust subscription share with no revenues or anything else. GPSS simply gives investors the right to buy Gollden Prospect Investment Trust at 46.14p. They have no revenues and they have nothing else that can possibly be assessed. . So some very impressive figures in the GPSS stock report, are complete rubbish and pure fiction surely.

If figures can be so spectacularly useless and wrong for GPSS what faith should subscribers have in the figures for everything else, including Investment Trusts?

Stocko Stock Ranks for investment trusts are fictional and should be ignored. They tend to misinterpret the inflow and outflow of funds as if they were income and compute a meaningless Op Mgn etc. When they catch it they suppress the rank creation but a lot of stocks slip through the net.

I hadn’t looked closely at their Investment Trust figures but have now, and I agree they should be ignored. For ages they did not provide figures for Investment Trusts and that was the sensible decision. Key things for consideration like discounts to NAV and whether wider or smaller than usual are excluded for starters. AIC and Trustnet are the go to sites for reliable Investment Trust facts and figures.
