Thanks and why I am not re-subscribing to Stockopedia

Today is the last day of my subscription to Stocko and I thought I'd leave a short note.

I've enjoyed the conversations and learned a few things from the folks on here. Overall it's a nice platform with a pleasant community that are always more than willing to try to help each other. Over the last year I've asked a few questions and got great feedback so thanks to all that took the time to answer my questions.

The flip side is that its also led to some lazy thinking on my part. The small cap reports are well researched and I've often skipped my own research to buy them based on Paul and Jack's nod. That's my fault and I need to be more disciplined but I am also sure I'm not the only one taking these shortcuts.

Just to be absolutely clear, that's not Stockopedia nor Jack or Paul's fault, its mine and I need to return to doing my own homework....

So, although I'll miss having a large number of nice folks to ask questions, the platform brings out my laziness far too much and it's been to the detriment of my performance. I wish you all the best and good luck in the markets.

Fair enough. I do wonder why Stockopedia isn't part of the homework though. That's how I use it anyway.

Find your comments a bit strange but we are all different. Stockopedia is just a toolkit, you use it as you see fit. There’s a few shortcuts but most of the tools are there if you want to graft in your own way. All the best though.

It's been almost entirely an opposite experience for me. I have just paid for my second year of subscription and Stockopaedia has encouraged me to read more widely and improved my discipline. The guru screens and NAPS have helped highlight ideas and stocks for further research and the learning pages have pointed me in the direction of books such as " The Art of Execution", "High Returns From Low Risk" and "Beyond the Zulu Principle". I have Stockopaedia to thank for all this and I find the whole thing hugely enjoyable and educational - which I hope is the point. I've also really enjoyed the insights of Edmund Shing.

Please don't take this as a criticism of your post - I just wanted to add my thoughts as someone who's been involved with the platform for a similar length of time as you.

I guess it influences people in different ways - definitely a positive influence for me though.

Up to about 2 years ago, I would’ve agreed with you. The overhaul of the site ruined it for me though, and I get my data and toolkits elsewhere. I only resubscribed for the SCVR. Like the original poster, I will let my Stocko subscription lapse.

SCVR is not a short cut to investment success. It's full of all the bias of its writters. Best to DYOR.

I totally understand, for me a mixture of lack of time and being more confident for less research leads me to 'shortcut' my own research compared to pre-stocko days. And I'm not sure that it isn't harming me slightly.

I'm aware of it and have to fight it but I'm not about to cancel either.

I previously used sharelockholmes which for a much smaller fee gave you the data and sorting capabilities but you had to decide for yourself if it was a good investment. Those stockranks are beguiling when they are nice and green and I just have to force myself to put more spadework in, although by then you're already biased!

For the first months after subscribing I spent a lot of time on the discussions area, clicking every unread post and making a few posts myself. At one point I noticed I was doing this far more than I was spending researching stocks.

Its just a habit, that takes a few repetitions to change that's all. I've been using the screens more and more recently and I found some superb looking stocks in mining - just bought into Xtract Resources (LON:XTR) on a breakout. This is under the radar so I coudn't have found this anywhere else. It just would be impossible now to go back to trading how I did before Stockopedia, of waiting for tips from magazines or on the BB's. Doing your own research, once you know how, is more addictive than following the ideas/opinions of others. Although for newbies that learning from others is indispensable to reach the level where you can do your own stuff.

Here in the discussions area, I dont use the SCVR, because it rarely covers commodity stocks, my main focus. I've found Ben Hobsons articles very useful in learning about screens, and I've comes across book recommendations from Ed Croft that I've found useful as well. I enjoy reading the many posts, but rarely do I buy and sell on the opinion of others however entertaining.

Stockopedia is not all about the SCVR and, Wills S, 12 months of membership is hardly long enough to learn to appreciate it. I admit to making mistakes in the first couple of years but get more confident as time goes by.

bias is fine if it is objective and declared. - which scar always is. And comments to challenge the main posts are permitted, even encouraged. . So I agree with your point but that is a given and explained at the top of each scvr.

For me the key is the screener, I then look further, Stockopedia has made a huge difference to me and my success and returns over the years. Only a few weeks ago I wanted to add an Oil producer that ticked the criteria I was looking at, looking at the constituents list and comparison tool showed up i3 Energy, taking this further with research I took a load at 13p, now at 17p and on many radars following the news last week on monthly dividend payments, for this one idea alone the Stockopedia subscription was worth it. This is one of many examples.

For me Stockopedia is a fantastic and essential tool to help me with my research and decisions.
