TRADING STYLES

Hi Everyone!

I only have one investment style. Rapid growth, with quality & momentum and at a reasonable price. I have specialized in it, developed my process for my specialization, and do very well. But I keep thinking about other styles to follow in addition to my current one . I might not do so well if growth goes out of fashion! Do any of you follow two or more trading styles at the same time? How well does it work for you? How do you manage to keep a different mindset for your different styles?

I am a keen & experienced investor. I love my spread sheets, and like to think that I know what I am doing. I wouldn't be offended to be described as a bit geeky. Mostly I do well, but I always strive to do better. Married male. Born 1957 England. Good career in industry for 35 years. Been successfully investing for about 30 years. I chose to retire from salaried employment at age 57 to look after my investments. I consider myself to be quite analytical / logical / mathematical, but also take into account how the world is likely to change & how people behave. It's quite possible to combine different styles so long as you know what you're doing and why you're doing it. For example, you could have your 'buy and holds' in one account - tracker funds, ETFs and things like Microsoft, and forget about them - more or less - for five years. Whilst you have your trades, or short term bets, in another account. In my experience this is easy enough to do and keeps the brain active.

Absolutely agree with that, i find even logging into the different accounts helps change the mindset appropriately.

Personally, I'm currently finding the Spreadbet, ISA & SIPP approach is excellent and also guides the expected trading/investing timeframes, increasing down the list.

Currently using: Spreadex, HL, HL respectively. Next year I intend to open/transfer ISA to a different provider though, so as to further increase 'separation' for my styles/strategies. Further down the line, I'd hope to add an FX only account too.

I would be interested to know how you are screening for rapid growth, quality, momentum and reasonable price.

To am11nnn : I have two screens . One of them is long & complicated. The basis of the other screen is relatively straight forward, as follows: Q rank >67, G rank >67, M rank >67, PEGR < 2.5. Instead of the PEGR requirement you could play around with V rank > 10 . I find the best way to get a good screen is to keep playing around with it, keep the features that work, and ditch the features that don't.

I have decided that I will follow an additional style. I will start work developing the strategy for it. It will be based on a high quality, high value ie contrarian approach. I will keep my approaches separate in terms of share selection process, folios and performance monitoring .

i also do rapid growth shares but mix it with very oversold shares as both have the potential to be multi-baggers
