UPDATE:

I wanted to provide an update on the response to the proposal for a Stockopedia Members Discord group. After a few days of polling, a higher number of respondents indicated that they were interested in joining the group than whom did not want to have one; some were even already in another group and didn't want to be in any more. Additionally, I would like to reiterate that this group is not officially affiliated with Stockopedia and will be self policed predominantly by its members. We hope to create a community where we can share ideas, learn from each other, and connect with like-minded investors like you in real-time conversations. We will keep you updated on the progress of the Discord group, and we appreciate your interest and support to those that willed it.

Development will continue forthwith. Go live date TBC.

Hey everyone,

I hope you're all doing well and staying sain in the wonderful world of stocks. As a member of Stockopedia, I've found it to be a fantastic resource for learning about and investing in stocks. However, I believe that we can take things a step further and create a community where we can discuss ideas and strategies in real-time.

To that end, I wanted to gauge if any interest exists in creating a Discord group for Stockopedia members. For those who are unfamiliar, Discord is a free chat platform that allows for voice and text communication in real-time. There are many benefits to joining such a group, such as:

Instant Feedback: Have a question or idea that you want to bounce off others? In a Discord group, you'll be able to get instant feedback from other Stockopedia members.
Networking: By joining the Discord group, you'll be able to connect with other like-minded investors and potentially even collaborate on investment ideas.
Live Trading Sessions: We can organize live trading sessions where we can discuss potential trades in real-time.
Education: In addition to discussing investment ideas, we can also use the Discord group to share educational resources such as articles, videos, and books.
Community: By joining the Discord group, you'll be able to connect with a community of like-minded investors who share your passion for investing in stocks.

I believe that a Discord group for Stockopedia members would be a valuable addition to the already-great resources that Stockopedia offers.

It’s possible to change your Stocko username too, I did this instead for the reason you outlined.

Of course, each to their own. It’s also possible to pay for discord nitro if that’s important to you. Others have expressed concern over non-subscribers being in the discord proposed, do you have a better suggestion to help police that, that doesn’t increase the workload for someone who is volunteering their time for the project?

Yes, this could happen in rare circumstances.

I dont much mind. if it means I cannot join then so-be-it. I dont want to pay for Nitro just to enable me to access the discord chat, no.
I dont know the solution. Get stocko to give you a list of active accounts each month to do the admin check against discord, and use this to map those with inconsistent usernames. Not sure TBH. but like all such projects, the devil is in the detail.

I had an immediate negative reaction to the name ‘Discord’. The premise sounds fine, but in my experience these things invariably become mouthpieces for a few and end up in argument and anti-social comments. Good luck, but it’s not for me.

This was discussed re coordinating with stocko to cross check user names, but the point remains that they would need to be consistent across both platforms to facilitate that. Whilst disappointing that this detail would mean that you choose not participate , there will always be something that someone isn’t happy with.

Stocko give you an occasional list of active subscribers in a column, you add another column for discord handle, which in many cases will be identicial, but in a few, will be different.

Once I am a member of discord, you will know if I am still a stocko subscriber because the next refreshed list from stocko will still have me on there, as an entry, or paying subscriber?

This would rely on stockpedia giving out data on their user base , I doubt they’d be happy about that…. For it to work it would likely need to work the opposite way, a list of discord usernames provided to Stockopedia who would then highlight any who weren’t in their userbase. If your discord handle was different this either makes more work for Stocko or for the discord server owner to monitor, being as how any discord user can alter their handle as often as they like I don’t see that this presents an easy solution either. It’s also possible to create more than one account on discord, perhaps this is the solution for you to pursue to maintain your anonymity, have different discord names for free, and comply with the rules proposed by Caduceus.

Again, the verification method suggested hasn’t been discussed with Stockopedia staff as yet, so as it stands, the discord server owner sets the rules (as with all discord servers), and those who wish to join must abide by them.

Not sure about rare, several profiles names I wanted were not available on Stockopedia, probably not even active.

What is to stop someone copying a Stockopedia members profile name and setting that up on Discord?

Then they must be exceedingly desperate to get in to go through such effort for a chat platform! Even if they did manage to fudge it, I'm intending to have any paid for content displayed via links that lead them back into stocko to read. So all the blagger would see is people talking about their opinions on stuff but unable to access the actual content (which is done on thousands of chat sites anyway).

User data and privacy issue in this idea I would think. The idea is a bit extreme for what I am trying to create, remember, its only a platform for people to chat in a more efficient/interactive/real-time way. We aren't going to be swapping bank account details with each other in the chatroom :). Either way, I'm working on ways to elevate your concerns. Not sure I get it though. You need to ensure your group members are stocko subscribers. So somehow you need to check that against Stocko's records (or am I missing something?)

Stocko provide a list of active usernames, nothing more. this doesn't seem anywhere compromising because this is a public alias? I haven't suggested exchanging bank details

You then check people when they sign up against that list. most will probably match, a few (in my case) wont match, but I would be able to say, "hey I am tic_tac_toe from Stocko, and this is me on discord, messaging you'?

People will join and leave all the time. So I dont see how else to keep it in sync?

sneak peek of the uk-stockanalysis section of the external chat group being created for enhanced discussions and research amongst members. All paid for content safely locked away behind the Stocko paywall so no intruders would get to access it without an active subscription (all they will see will be generic research, opinions and discussions within the group; which is not paid for content).

Reminder: This external group is not officially affiliated with Stockopedia and will be self policed predominantly by its members.

I look forward to this group. I think it is important that conduct is polite and civilized unlike other online platforms that I have given up on.

That is part of the rule set people have to agree to prior to joining.
