Firstly, some of you may consider this post slightly off topic. It is about money and about quantative analysis but its not completely about Stocks and so some of you may want to close this post and move on - and thats ok.

The other day I got to thinking about how a Stockrank can tell me if a Stock has Quality, Value and Momentum characteristics and thinking that it would be great if I could analyse which charities to give to based on similar criteria.

Some of you may be considering giving to charity this Christmas or may give at other times in the year. One of my investing goals is to enable me to give a proportion of the profits to charity and as, in my experience, this community contains, smart, wealthy people then probably some of you do to.

When I give to charity, I can't help but be sceptical about how much good my money actually does. In my head I'm always thinking that probably lots of the money goes on admin or doesn't actually get to the intended recipients. Also - how can I tell if a Charity can actually use more money, maybe they have a surplus already and can't use it quick enough.

So I did some research and it turns out you can already find out which are the "best" charities to give to based on ranking systems that work a bit like Stockranks. There are even sites like Stockopedia but for Charities that can help you decide who to give to.

Charities can be ranked in several ways but to draw a comparison with StockRanks....

Momentum - A charity can be ranked on how much spare capacity it has to use additional money. A charity that is already fully funded for the programmes it has running would have a lower momentum rank than one that can use the extra money quickly.

Quality - A charity can be ranked based on how much good it does, and how well it can proove and is transparent about how well it does vs its administrative expenses. A charity that does a lot of good (and there is even a measure for this called a QUALY) with a low admin overhead is better than one that…
