Hi

I ran an experiment this morning to see whether AI could make the regular process of reviewing my portfolio easier. It did, and I thought it might be useful for others to see the results.

I have a three  Stockopedia portfolios that I manage, which have grown up over a period of time. I review them on a 6 monthly basis, and that normally involves extracting data from Stockopedia and doing various checks and planning what to sell, what to buy and how to balance the portfolio.

I chose to use Grok for the experiment, but obviously other AI's are available.

1. Provide the inputs

First things first, I need to compile a dataset that can be fed into Grok. That means, a list of the holdings that I have, by current market value.

I downloaded the Stockopedia portfolio files (just standard download) then uploaded it to Grok and asked it to consolidate it into a list. It did it perfectly, first time, and also summarised the shares that were duplicated across the different portfolio types.

My Prompt 1: I have attached three files with information about shares that I own. Please consolidate the three files into a single table showing stock name, ticker and market value

Grok Output: Below is a consolidated table showing the stock name, ticker, and market value (Value GBP) from the three provided files

2. Ask for what you want to do

I then asked it to calculate the purchases needed to rebalance the portfolio (prompts below). It did it step by step showing the basis of calculation. It was even smart enough to sport that I had included StockRanks in my spreadsheet and used this to prioritise the proposed investments. It included full narrative showing additional considerations (e.g. risk, sector diversification).

My Prompt 2: I have 20000 GBP to invest. Please update this table to show which shares I should purchase in order to achieve a minimum holding that is at the average holding value for the portfolio as a whole. Ignore [share 1] and [share 2] from this calculation

Grok Output: The updated table includes the original holdings plus the four new holdings. The new holdings are appended with their calculated market values.

Notes:

  • New Holdings:
    • [list]
  • Total Investment: 19,942.50 GBP, leaving 57.50 GBP unallocated (insufficient for another holding ≥ 5,053.99 GBP).
  • Average Holding Value Check:
    • New holdings are close to or exceed…
