With ISA season nearly upon us, the financial press is beginning to ratchet up the commentary on just how and where investors should be deploying their tax-free allowances. Jonathan Eley in the FT this week touched on some of the points to consider. He also made the observation that while it's often advised that you should “run your winners and cut your losers", most investors do the opposite. They sell winners too early and fall prey to emotional flaws that cause them to hang on to stocks that have done badly for far too long. This so-called 'disposition effect' is by no means confined to individual investors… studies like this one by Inalytics have long shown that professional fund managers suffer from exactly the same problem.

Fortunately for investors in Berkshire Hathaway, chairman Warren Buffett rarely finds himself on the wrong end of an investment decision (although he did admit recently that he'd been rather too slow to offload his Tesco stock).
