I have spent a massive amount of time looking into which are the best companies to buy. I did well with this approach. This is obviously very important, but what I have learnt more recently, is that  it is  also very important to recognize which styles of companies are on the up, and which styles of companies are out of favor.  What is the market looking for? Is  it risk on or risk off? Is it value or growth? Is it for capital growth or income? 

Did your most successful  investments work for you because they were very good companies or were they just  in the sweet spot of what the market wanted?  We all like to think that we are great investors, but the investment climate makes a massive difference.  So what was the secret of your success?
