A decade ago, many oil analysts thought $10 a barrel was the new normal. Just six months ago, when prices were just below $150, forecasters said $200 oil was not out of the question. So the question for all your Stockopedes if you dare is as follows: factoring in all the variables (supply-and-demand,  recessions & demand destruction, civil wars, major geopolitical crises, the weather,…

Global Finance have published an updated list of the 50 safest banks in the world. To the UK's shame, HSBC is the highest ranked entrant at number 19 and, apart from Nationwide Building Society, is the only UK entrant on the list. That this is a period of unprecedented upheaval is amply illustrated by the fact that this list includes 13 newcomers—which means more…

The Competition Commission (CC) has provisionally concluded that the completed acquisition by Capita Group plc (Capita) of IBS OPENSystems plc (IBS) could damage compe-tition in the market for the supply of revenues and benefits software to local authorities in the UK. Before the merger, both Capita and IBS sold revenues and benefits software, which is used by local authorities to collect council tax and business…

World's biggest platinum refiner and fabricator Latest trading results mixed. Despite favourable currency tailwinds, the company reported weaker sales in the final quarter of its financial year, largely due to lower demand for autocatalysts as car companies continued to reduce production and soft platinum group metals prices. However, its process technologies division achieved good growth in the three months to end-March as environmental concerns…

Goldman Sachs has apparently hiked its forecasts for Chinese GDP and reckons the magical growth figure of 8 per cent could be reached this year. Aggressive policy easing and better-than-expected results from the stimulus have made a stronger case for China’s growth re-rating. Since the announcement of the Rmb4 trillion fiscal stimulus package last November, policymakers in China have been pushing the envelope on policy…

I don't know - I have been pretty impressed by the way that a) they sold Ishares so quickly and b) avoided the bailout. They seem pretty fleet of foot and look like a winner in what will admittedly clearly be a less profitable industry going forward...

I am with Tom on this one - the market may be ugly but this is a classic business restructuring story, so I see big upside to the current share price now that the business has been de-risked. The share price graphs above do look wrong though - it seems to be for a different stock as Friday's close was 6.75, not 54!
