Occupation: Private Investor, Retired

About Me:

I am a keen & experienced investor. I love my spread sheets, and like to think that I know what I am doing. I wouldn't be offended to be described as a bit geeky. Mostly I do quite well, but I would like to do a lot better.

Married male. Born 1957 England. Good career in industry for 35 years.

Been successfully investing for about 30 years.

I chose to retire at age 57 to look after my investments.

I consider myself to be quite analytical / logical / mathematical, but also take into account how the world is likely to change & how people behave.

I always follow my processes before taking action. I am a great believer in continuous improvement and spend a great deal of time improving my processes.

Investment Strategy
I trade... weekly
I tend to buy... according to my system
I hold for... a year
Diversification is ... essential to reduce risk
Buy and hold for maximum total return. I prefer growth companies, but don't restrict my investments to that area. I don't need any income from dividends, but like to get it because it can be a significant proportion of total returns.

Hello Everybody. I have just been conducting some research on here into which stock ranks have been performing best in the market. I found it interesting, and it occurred to me that others might too. So here we go! Here is what I did. I went on the "Ranks" tab above. Then to "performance" Then I made the following selections: UK, Value Rank, >£100m, Quarterly,…

How or where can I figure out what factors are driving the market recently? Eg exchange rates, risk on or off attitude, interest rates, political events, etc etc. I am not willing to pay for expensive subscriptions for this information. But I would consider a sensible subscription fee. Or I am happy to look in the right places to find out for myself. I find…

Can anyone shed any light on why Swallowfield's share price is dropping so rapidly?

Where do your best investment ideas come from? Small Cap Value Reports? Tip Sheets. If so which? Your own screens? Elsewhere? I always put any purchase idea through my thorough process before buying it. I tend to use tip sheets a lot, although I reject the great majority of their tips. I'm pretty handy with using the excellent screens on here. My portfolio significantly beats…

Photo-Me has today released a strong trading update. Here is a flavour of it: "The Group made excellent progress in the financial year, reflecting the success of its strategy of investing in new products, growing its laundry business and favourable currency movements. The photo identification and laundry businesses continued to perform well. The Board expects the financial year ended 30 April 2017 will be in…

I agree to a limited extent that you betting on the management. But I also think that the moat is very important. A brilliant leader can leave the company, but if there is a wide moat, then it will remain, because the definition of a moat is a SUSTAINABLE competitive advantage. In addition it's worth considering whether the industry that they are operating in is…

I can't figure out where we are supposed to be on the JPM graphic. But I want to stay in tune with the market to make maximum returns. To do this I regularly check how the different stock ranks have performed over different recent time periods. You can see my recent conclusions in a comment that I have just added to my original post entitled…

Hi Mark, As it happens, I just did the exercise again this morning in a similar way to my original post, but this time looking at the last 1 month, and the last 3 months. So this data is up to date. 1 month 3 months V -1.63 4.83 Q 1.05 4.06 M 1.95 6.94 G 0.61 4.11 My tentative conclusions from this are that…

Hello Joe4560 Next time you ask a question I would like to suggest that you make the heading more in line with the content of your post. You will get better answers that way. For the vast majority of the time, the market cap graph will precisely mirror the share price graph. The only time that this does not apply is if new shares have…

Hi Abtan. You ask why it's only up 6% today. Possibilities that I can see are: 1) Institutions are a bit slow to react to news due to their processes. I am hoping that this is the case because it would mean that the share price would continue to rise over a longer period of time. 2) Maybe the strong share price rise over the…
