Fundamentally, it means that the formal diplomatic framework intended to end the six-month war has collapsed. However, it is not immediately obvious what this means on the ground. Both nations claim the other violated the terms almost immediately after signing it in June.
There were reports of drone attacks launched from the Iranian border targeting Kurdish infrastructure in northern Iraq yesterday, though no direct US-Iran kinetic clashes inside Iranian territory followed immediately overnight.
Presumably the Strait of Hormuz Stays Restricted and the US Blockade Resumes. However, traffic hadn’t returned to pre-war levels anyway. Earlier in the day, Iranian officials said they were close to finalising a deal with Oman, which would have allowed transit through Hormuz. Fox News reports that Trump has threatened to bomb US ally Oman if it "gets in the way" of his administration's own talks with Iran.
Oil markets are pricing in no swift resolution to this standoff, and Brent Crude hit $90/bbl. However, the major indices are relatively sanguine about what all of this means for equities, with the...

Daily Stock Market Report (Mon 17th August 2026) - TIME, MWE, TEP, GATC, SPR, GMS

Good morning. Expectations for a US rate rise have eased, leaving the dollar weaker after US government data revealed that retail sales fell in July.
Oil prices have edged higher as the US and Israel show signs of stepping up pressure on Iran and Lebanon, respectively, in the Middle East.
Closer to home, Housing Secretary Angela Rayner is expected to announce changes to the UK’s planning system today. These are said to include increasing protection for pubs (from being converted to other uses) and making it easier for housebuilders to build new homes close to existing rail and underground stations.
Many of the UK’s listed housebuilders are trading at intriguing discounts to their book value, as we’ve discussed here a number of times recently. So it will be interesting to see how the market interprets today’s changes – while they may make it easier to secure permission for some new developments, they won’t necessarily do anything to address the pricing and cost pressures that are squeezing builders’ margins.

In other news, US CPI fell 0.4% month-on-month in June, according to data released yesterday.
It was a larger fall than the 0.1% decline that markets had expected, and it resulted in a year-on-year inflation rate of 3.5% (vs. 3.8% expected). This is still much higher than the Fed’s official 2% target (although the Fed prefers to use Core PCE, rather than CPI).

The FTSE 100 went the other way as investors worried about the impact of the ongoing Middle East tensions:
Brent Crude also reflected these worries. Starting the week at around $83/bbl, it peaked at close to $89, before retreating somewhat:
Interestingly, gold appears to have decoupled from its recent negative correlation with oil prices, perhaps suggesting that the dollar liquidity requirements of oil-export-constrained Middle Eastern countries have eased. Gold looks like it will end the week flat, but holding on to last week's gains:

It’s an excellent quant stock – a StockRank of 93, with a Momentum score of 93 and Value score of 73. It’s also a strong proposition from a qualitative perspective. Adjusted EBIT hit a record £196 million in H1, rate uncertainty and a possible energy volume recovery are tailwinds, and the shares have pulled back from their highs.

TP ICAP is the world's largest interdealer broker, sitting between banks and asset managers in over-the-counter markets and taking a clip on the trade.
It also owns Parameta Solutions, a high-margin data business, and Liquidnet – which lets large institutional investors (like mutual funds and pension funds) buy and sell stocks and bonds in large blocks, anonymously.
For me, the thesis is a simple one.
The shares trade on 8.9x forward earnings with a 6% yield covered 1.85x, and estimates for both 2026 and 2027 have risen over three months.

The original statement can be read here.
Here’s the key paragraph:
Memorandums of understanding signed with six of the world’s premier financial institutions to create these partnerships aim to establish the first compute financing platforms of their kind at global scale to enable the AI infrastructure buildout across NVIDIA’s ecosystem, including leading frontier AI labs, enterprises and AI clouds. Under these strategic partnerships, NVIDIA will work with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR to create dedicated pools of capital at significant scale at attractive rates for NVIDIA customers.
In other words, Nvidia is helping to arrange cheap debt for their AI industry customers, in order to further boost demand for Nvidia's processing power.
I would categorise this news story in the same way that I categorise the forthcoming AI IPOs, expected to be at eye-watering valuations, and the other very large fundraising deals we’ve seen this year, such as the $80 billion equity raise carried out by Alphabet recently. This is the signal to follow.

Our team's nine FTSE 250 Stock Pitches this year are all in profit, up 36.9% since publication. It’s not down to luck. Many of them were riding a repeatable signal, and it's still firing.

The FTSE 250 Index (FTSE:MCX) used to be seen as the powerhouse index of Britain. It hosted the best of British mid-caps - dynamic, exporting growth stocks - even shaking off Brexit concerns to hit a peak in 2021. But since then, it struggled underwater for nearly five years - 1,798 days to be precise. But last week, on the 4th August it finally broke above those highs, and now looks like clearing 25,000, up 11% for the year.
This is a signal that money is coming back to undervalued British shares, but it’s still being picky. The poor AIM index remains 39% below its 2021 peak. So there’s not yet a rising tide - but capital is certainly returning to quality mid-caps. More than this, when the market gets selective, mid-cap stock pickers can do exceptionally well. So in this article - I’m going to give you some tools to hunt in that direction.

Elsewhere, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) said its monthly sales rose by 45% in July, driven by AI demand. More broadly, Asian markets have traded higher today as fears of a US rate rise eased and investors continued to back the AI trade.

The US-Iran situation has been ongoing since the end of February, so I’ll put that to one side for the sake of this article.
US CPI
Inflation is always a hot topic and persistently above-target inflation is an important feature of the US economic and political landscape.
Wednesday will see the release of US CPI data for July. Here’s the year-on-year change in CPI:

Source: tradingeconomics.com
The impact of the Iran War became really noticeable in April, when US CPI growth surged to nearly 5%, and it hasn’t softened much since then.
The July reading is expected to remain flat at 4.7%.
Core CPI, excluding food and energy, will be released at the same time on Wednesday. Here’s the same chart for core inflation:

Source: tradingeconomics.com
This is expected to come in at 2.5%, slightly lower than June’s 2.6%.

Iran: oil has been ticking higher again, with various negative developments around the Strait of Hormuz. The latest one is that Iran now wishes to ban US and Israeli ships from the strait, and that “hostile countries” would have to pay compensation to gain access to it. This comes after Iran and Oman jointly agreed on how those two countries wish to jointly manage shipping routes in the area.
President Trump said yesterday that negotiations with Iran are “moving along good”, but the US blockade of Iranian ports continues and Iran’s financial demands appear to be increasing, and so it’s difficult to see a full reopening of the Strait in the short-term.

I’ve read countless trading updates and results over the last year in which companies have commented on these factors.
Obviously many of these concerns were real. Some of them still are. But I’ve been struck recently by the number of relatively positive updates we’ve seen from companies in the Consumer Cyclicals sector.
Notable examples have included Halfords (LON:HFD), Works co uk (LON:WRKS) and Sosandar (LON:SOS) (which I covered in a Stock Pitch last week). But there have been plenty more – and they’ve often reported improved fundamentals, with margin recovery in addition to top line sales growth.
Is pressure easing?
Looking at a cross section of UK economic data suggests to me that the situation remains quite finely balanced.
Inflation has eased over the last year, despite the spike caused by the sharp increase in energy costs in March which followed the start of the Iran conflict.

However, it looks...

Daily Stock Market Report (Fri 26th June 2026) - DFCH, WISE, DEVO, HERC

Good morning. Apple increased the prices of its MacBook and iPad products by 20% yesterday, citing memory shortages caused by the AI boom.
While the US firm has held off from hiking iPhone prices so far, the decision sparked a 6% drop in Apple shares yesterday over concerns that consumers would be unable to absorb higher prices. This triggered a broader sell-off in Asian indices – the Nikkei closed down nearly 5%, while Korea’s chip-heavy Kospi index closed nearly 7% lower.
The AI boom has driven fantastic profits for many companies in the sector, but it is hardware intensive and global semiconductor manufacturing capacity is constrained and relatively inflexible. It may be worth watching for further company-specific impact from such shortages.
Elsewhere, a number of oil tankers attempting to exit the Strait of Hormuz turned round and paused their journeys after a ship was attacked on Thursday. The International Maritime Organization has paused its evacuation programme for ships bottled up in the Strait. However, the impact on oil prices has been very limited so far.

Finally, this week’s European heatwave is said to be the worst on record. It dropped back to $115.98, more than 40% below its June high and also well below its IPO price of $135.
The quarterly revenue number was excellent at $7.8 billion, up 92% and easily beating analyst forecasts of $6.8 billion.
The loss was also much lower than expected, with EPS of minus 9 cents vs. analyst forecasts of minus 24 cents.
So the headline numbers were excellent, but the stock had already rallied for 24 hours before they were released.
And when you have a market cap of $1.65 trillion, with a price to sales multiple of 42x, it’s always going to be tricky to meet investor expectations.

News from the Middle East continues to confuse, with Donald Trump claiming he called off a major attack on Iran to offer the republic a “last chance” in talks “before decapitation”. Iran, for its part, has denied that it is in talks with the US but says it’s continuing to work with Oman to set up new shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
The oil market has digested the facts and nudged the price of crude oil a little higher overnight.
Elsewhere, the FT leads with an exclusive article (paywall) looking at a $200bn “finance machine” that Google has assembled to fund demand from Anthropic for AI chips and data centres.
It’s a complex story involving chip manufacturer Broadcom, various crypto data centre operators and a private-credit vehicle backed by names including Blackstone and Apollo.
Ultimately, though, this appears to be vendor financing on a large and concentrated scale. The FT concludes that for Google, “$200bn of contracts [are] tied to Anthropic’s ability to pay its chip and data centre leases.”

However, the analysis he presented isn't just a historical look at past returns, but an ongoing opportunity to find companies whose prospects may be improving. The team have added the ability to screen for recent Stock Rank jumpers, and Ed wrote an article including some recent hits.
Severfield (LON:SFR) is one such company on the list, whose recent Super Stock status is driven by results released on 23 June. This is a sector I know reasonably well, having invested in its high-quality competitor, Billington Holdings (LON:BILN) , for a few years now. Perhaps the Stock Rank jump is a sign that I should consider spreading my sector investment more widely. Writing up a Stock Pitch is a great way to find out.
