Grounds for optimism

A modest drop in the share price following the interim announcement says more about City nervousness than the actual figures. The current difficulties were largely foreshadowed in a trading statement in June, although the predictable reduction in the pension fund value will not have helped sentiment. The group has an agreement with its pension fund trustees for a manageable deficit reduction scheme and looks to be well past the worst in terms of trading performance.
