BUZZ-France's CAC 40 heads for worst day in 3 months on new COVID-19 variant

** France's CAC 40 index  .FCHI  hits its lowest levels in a
month, on track for the worst single-day drop since mid-Sept, as
the new coronavirus variant detected in Southern Africa sends
shivers down European markets*:nL8N2SH14X
    ** The index grouping France's 40 biggest companies slumps
well over 3%, with shopping mall group URW  URW.AS , jet maker
Airbus  AIR.PA , aero-defense parts supplier group Safran
 SAF.PA  and hotel group Accor  ACCP.PA  among its worst
performers with falls around 8%-10%
    ** Among the least affected names, though falling 0.6%-1.4%,
are call centre group Teleperformance  TEPRF.PA , telecom Orange
 ORAN.PA , drug and vaccine developer Sanofi  SASY.PA , and IT
group Dassault Systemes  DAST.PA , whose software has been
previously used in COVID-19 vaccine and treatment trials 
    ** Scientists say the new variant could prove
vaccine-resistant due to its unusual form*:nL1N2SG0OQ
    ** To fight a fifth wave of coronavirus infections, France
is introducing a series of measures, including extension of
COVID-19 booster shots to all adults, plans to step up border
    ** On Thursday, the country reported 33,464 new cases, above
the 30,000 mark for the third time in a row, a pattern unseen
since late April
