UPDATE 1-Norway should bring back mortgage restriction, bank regulator says

Fri 28th August, 2020 3:02pm
(Adds central bank comment)
OSLO, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Norway should not extend a
temporary relaxation of mortgage lending regulations that was
introduced earlier this year to cushion the housing market
during the COVID-19 outbreak, the Financial Supervisory
Authority (FSA) said on Friday.
The central bank supported the FSA's view, it said in a
separate statement, adding that ending the temporary measure
could help prevent the accumulation of imbalances in the
financial system.
Housing prices have risen more rapidly in recent months as
banks were allowed greater flexibility in their lending
practices, making mortgages available to more borrowers.
A final decision on whether to extend the rules into the
fourth quarter will be made by Norway's finance ministry.
Central bank rate cuts have also contributed to the recent
rise in housing prices.
