BUZZ-EU online retail: CS sees shift to multi-brand distribution

Thu 11th February, 2021 8:27am
** As Europe's apparel sales shift to e-commerce, retailers
need to reconsider the traditional model where they have been
the only distributors of their own brands, Credit Suisse says
** When shopping online, people tend to pick multi-brand
websites to avoid having dozens of apps on their phones and
re-entering payment and contact details on each of them, CS says
** This means that in the future, there will be increasing
separation of brands and distribution with Zara or H&M HMb.ST
products eventually being sold on Zalando and some of its peers,
CS says
** At the same time, the broker does not see the U.S. giant
Amazon AMZN.O as a significant threat to the European players
because it does not have an apparel brand of its own
    ** Berlin-based Zalando ZALG.DE is a solid candidate for
the position of Europe's main multi-brand vendor if it builds up
a UK presence, but its shares have become inflated, CS says, and
cuts to "neutral" from "buy"
** Marks & Spencer MKS.L could also become a marketplace
thanks to its strong position in British e-commerce and large
store network for "click and collect" services, CS says
** "We also note that Ocado OCDO.L has quite a material
non-food branded business, which in theory could work with M&S,"
the broker adds
