An $85 bln union of Infineon and STMicroelectronics would bring heft, plus cost savings to mollify investors. Follow @liamwardproud on Twitter CONTEXT NEWS - The European Commission on March 9 set a target of increasing the bloc’s share of global high-end semiconductor production to 20% by 2030. - Europe and the Middle East together account for 7% of the world’s production capacity for integrated-circuit chips, according to industry trade body SEMI. - Infineon Technologies in 2017 held talks about buying STMicroelectronics, Bloomberg reported in 2018, citing people familiar with the matter. The German group hired BNP Paribas and studied the purchase for about three months, the report said.
