Japan's Hokkaido Elec shuts all fossil fuel plants after quake

TOKYO, Sept 6 (Reuters) - 
    * Japan's Hokkaido Electric Power Co  9509.T  says it
conducted an
emergency shutdown of all its fossil fuel-fired power plants
after a powerful earthquake, leading to blackouts across Japan's
northern island of Hokkaido.
    * Efforts to restore power to 2.95 million customers were
way but it was not clear when supplies would be restored, a
company spokesman said.
    * A steel production facility at Mitsubishi Steel
 5632.T  group's firm in Muroran, Hokkaido,  caught fire after
the quake but the fire was mostly extinguished with no injuries,
a company official said.
    * A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.7 in Hokkaido caused
landslide that engulfed houses early on Thursday, injuring and
trapping a number of people and cutting power in several areas.*:nL5N1VR684
