Salmon price hits all-time high, seen lower for January

Fri 20th December, 2013 12:18pm
OSLO, Dec 20 (Reuters) - The price of Norwegian farmed salmon unexpectedly climbed further this week to a new record level and will likely reach another peak next week before declining in January, exporter told Reuters on Friday. Prices for the current week have reached 51-53 Norwegian crowns per kilo, up from 51.2 crowns last week, while industry observers had expected it to decline to 49-50 crowns as some processing plants close ahead of the upcoming holiday season. But the supply of salmon has proven tight due to rough weather on Norway's west coast, and traders now expect the price to hit 53-55 crowns next week, depending on where deliveries are scheduled to take place. "This level is too high and prices will fall in January", one exporter noted. Broker Piotr Wingaard at salmon trading exchange Fish Pool pointed out that the weakening of the Norwegian currency had contributed to the price rise. He said contract prices for the first quarter of 2014 stood at 45 crowns and that for the whole of 2014, contract prises were at 40 crowns per kilo.
