FACTBOX-Global retailers part of cotton trade body targeted in China

Fri 26th March, 2021 2:32pm
March 26 (Reuters) - Burberry BRBY.L on Friday became the first luxury brand to be hit by the
Chinese backlash to Western accusations of abuses in Xinjiang, losing a Chinese brand ambassador and
having its hallmark tartan design scrubbed from a popular video game. urn:newsml:reuters.com:*:nL4N2LO0PZ
The protests against Western companies escalated quickly this week to target members of the Better
Cotton Initiative (BCI), a group that promotes sustainable cotton production, which said last year it was
suspending its approval of cotton sourced from Xinjiang for the 2020-2021 season, citing human rights
concerns. urn:newsml:reuters.com:*:nL8N2LN3WA urn:newsml:reuters.com:*:nL1N2LN0E5
On Friday, the China branch of the cotton trade body, whose remit also includes improving conditions
in the garment sector, said it had not found signs of forced labor related to cotton production in
Xinjiang. urn:newsml:reuters.com:*:nL1N2LO0NT
