I'd recommend Contrarian Investment Strategies - By David Dreman

more technical but influenced me:

Quantitative Value: A Practitioner's Guide to Automating Intelligent Investment- By Wes Gray & Tobias Carlise

I also did a post about a more recent book here which I'm just reading and looks promising.

The book is calledExcess Returns: A comparative study of the methods of the world's greatest investors

Best book I've read this year is "Behavioural Portfolio Management" by C. Thomas Howard.

Just go buy it ! There's so much in there I agree with - from releasing one's 'emotional brakes', becoming comfortable with short term volatility for long term gains, blurring out the names of companies you are buying etc. The biggest issues for investors are behavioural - this helps to notice and deal with them.

"The Zurich Axioms" by Max Gunther. A quick read but with some no nonsense axioms which could just save you money and make you a better investor/speculator!

It's a couple of years old now but "Cracking the Code" by Jim Mellon and Al Chalabi . After reading it you might just realise what a mistake it is not to have some Biotech in your portfolio. And for all those who say it's too risky buy an investment trust like the brilliantly managed Biotech Growth Trust. This story still has a long long way to run!

An interesting selection including titles most of which I have not come across - More homework to do.

The book that has most changed my investment strategy for the better its Pat Dorsey's, "The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing". His "Moat" concept alongside his quality screening metrics such as FCF/Sales, ROA, Net Margin and ROIC% are outstanding.

In terms of easy reading with an lot of common sense, my pick has to be Robbie Burns, "The Naked Trader". This is a book worth re-reading several times.

Both books are well worth the cost and if implemented sensibly will re-pay expenditure many fold. Ian

Speaking of Jim Mellon has anyone else ordered his latest book Fast Forward? I ordered in early November (hard copy) and am yet to received it - there is no link or address to contact the publisher either as far as I can tell - pretty disappointing really. Hope I get it before Christmas.

Thanks to all contributors - some interesting additions for my bookshelf have now been selected - 3 of 5 choices picked up at bargain 2nd-hand prices via abebooks. The other two have been added to my wish list - let's hope Santa puts them into my Christmas stocking !

One book that I will add that was published only last week is Dual Momentum by Gary Antonacci http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dual-Momentum-Investing-Innovative-Strategy/dp/0071849440

I have just finished reading it and it gives a new insight into share/bond asset allocation based on 12 month market momentum. The concept has been back tested 40 years on the S&P 500 and uses ETFs to limit the damage of bear markets such as 2000 and 2007. If it does this for me in the future it will have been worth every penny.

I too have sourced some of the older investment books recommended above from EBay Buy it Now at a fraction of their cover price - Highly recommended
