Hello,

So I've had my free trial and am now subscribed, and I'm learning loads. I've started to reposition my portfolio hopefully in a better fashion to how it existed a few weeks ago.

I'm sure I'll be posting more here soon...

But some really easy questions for today..

How long does Ex Div last on a stock and where can i find the dates that Ex Div is dropped?

Also I have quite a big holding of £SMT. My allocation is showing purely financials which obviously sees me very overweight in that sector, although Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust (LON:SMT) is made of many tech stocks which I am showing as underweight. Is this just a thing or is there a way to breakout the individual stocks for Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust (LON:SMT) to give a truer representation?

I think the ex-dividend varies from one stock to the next - you should be able to find dates for the stock going ex-dividend and when the dividend will be paid in the interim/annual reports statements of a company.

Anyone holding a share at close of business on the ex div date will be entitled to the dividend. The dividend is usually not paid for a month or so - on the Hargreaves Lansdown platform a share is marked as ex div if the ex div date has passed but the dividend has not yet been paid. You can get an indication of when the dividend is likely to be paid from the stock report for a share - if you click on Accounts, Dividend Summary you will see historical information for the share showing both the ex div date and the date the dividend was paid.

So the company itself decides that a stock will once again trade with dividend at their convenience? Or it reinstates on dividend pay day?

Sorry if this seems like a basic question, I just can't seem to find the answer? Obviously Ex Div dates are very widely available.

Sure, just can't seem to find information on when the stock will trade with dividend again. Somebody somewhere must decide...

The board of directors decide whether to pay dividends or not. So once a stock has gone XD if you buy it after that date you will not get any dividends until such time as the board decide to declare another one, which they may or may not do as we have seen recently with many companies and some even withdrawing those they had previously announced but not yet paid. I hope this clears it up for you.

No... After Ex-dividend means you miss out on the next dividend ...So .. there are 2 dates .. Ex-dividend and the date that Dividend is paid. If you buy the share after Ex-dividend you will miss out on that next payout but will get the dividend after.

Example for BLV (which I hold)

So if I was to buy shares in BLV on the 12 of April 2019 I would miss out on the 20th of May payment, but would get the 24th of October's dividend.. Hope this helps..

12th September 2019	24th October 2019	3.40p	Interim

Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust (LON:SMT), my broker shows the top 10 holdings, TESLA is over 11% and Amazon is over 10%. You could do it manually but I don't think there is any other way on Stockopedia.

Re dividends, most brokers show this information, not sure if it's on here.

Aaaah I answered my own question...

If you buy Ex Div you won't get the current 'promised' dividend, but you will get the next one, so it does not matter when the stock loses the Ex Div status..

I was always taught there was no such thing as a silly question, forgive me..

You need a quick lesson about record dates, try this:

I'm pretty sure Stockopedia counts all investment trusts as financial stocks regardless of what stocks they hold, which is obviously a bit misleading. You just need to bear this in mind when looking at your allocation, and be aware of the underlying stocks if it bothers you.

One of the problems with trying to monitor the underlying holdings and their prices is that a chunk (recently made bigger) are of the non-listed variety so impossible to track their prices.
