Stockopedia in Europe and/or USA?

Hi

I am considering extending into European and/or American stocks with Stockopedia. I use SP heavily to support my UK investing. I would welcome any experiences (good, no so good or surprising) or lessons learned that others have had as they stepped into these markets with SP.

I look forward to reading any ideas, thoughts or titbits you might have a few minutes to share with me.

It is more of the same for US and Europe. The main problem will be having a broker that will trade the shares you find. This is easier for the US than Europe.

Thank you for your rapid response and your useful points.

One area of experiences I was hoping to tap into with this posting, in addition to reading about how SP operates in these markets, is to also solicit responses about other people's sources of analysis of either US and/or European stocks.

I refer extensively to Paul Scott, SP community comments, Investors Chronicle, Moneyweek, company websites and others to obtain as broad a contextual setting as possible to augment the SP quants, for my UK stock picking.

Could I trouble you to ask if you have tapped into any useful sources to support your own European/US stock picking?

Hi Howard,

Seeking alpha is great for US stocks. It's a crowd sourced research site. However research on smaller stocks is often only available to PRO subscribers. PRO membership is very expensive at about c.$2000 per year. You can pay via writing articles for the site but the quality bar is pretty high. (You have to get a minimum number of page views a month)

Thanks for 'Seeking Alpha' site tip and highlighting the pricing policy, I'll test it out for a while, not the PRO membership though at the moment.

I like to check director dealings and for the US and UK this is easy with free info. For Europe there is a professional service which is out of reach. There are also lots of free stock screens and other pay for services in the US that are rivals of Stockopedia but if you want a pay for service it will be cheaper just to add the US to your sub.

There is a tonne of information on the US and you will even be able to read the reports/accounts and listen to live webinars of company reports. For Europe there is a language barrier and I am not aware of a good commentary in English on them. There are certainly people doing the same thing as Paul in Germany in German. In the US, there are many stock tipping and news services that are very well established some free but most are to pay for. Barons, O'Neils Investor's Business Daily and the American Association of Individual Investors. As many services are available online they are within global reach.

If you have a broker Such As TD or IB then most US shares will be in reach. Most of the stocks ranked 99 in Europe are in Norway which will be difficult to deal. Maybe Saxobank or IB otherwise expect some level of frustration even if you try and screen out countries or exchanges you cannot invest in.

If you are not comfortable with just investing based on a stock screen and technical analysis then ask for a trial of Europe and have a look and a hard think.

Maybe the merger of the UK and German Exchanges will improve things.

Hi,

I have UK, US, EU and Aus versions of stockopedia and I have investments in all of these regions.

For me this is absolutely not the case. I use You Invest (formerly SIP Deal) as my broker.

I have holdings in France, Germany, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Lativa, Sweden.

You can see my holdings by looking at my fantasy fund which closely mirrors the holdings in my own portfolios (sadly not the £1m starting balance)

I've done really well by spreading my preferred approach across a broad investment universe rather than compromising my approach just to focus on the UK.

I personally don't need to see a lot of news about a company (other than their quarterly updates), I'm not really interested in the opinions of 'experts' and so my Stocko screens plus access to price histories so I can chart the investments (Ichimoku and Point n Figure) is all I need.

The downsides of foreign selections are:

a) increased brokerage fees, e.g. it can be hard to get an online trade in a lot of EU, Aus and some US stocks so you end up paying the £30 telephone dealing fee.

b) you'll pay foreign exchange fees when you buy and sell your holdings. For me that's 1% on buys and sells.

c) you might not get your full dividend due to with holding tax

For me, my returns more than wash these issues away.

Thanks for the link to your Fantasy Fund, that's interesting and adds encouragement to step into other markets. I currently do this via trusts but now want to invest directly into the different market equities.
