Retirement of Flavia Cheong
The Company notes the announcement yesterday of Flavia Cheong's intention to
retire from her position as Head of Equities, Asia Pacific, at Aberdeen
Investments after 30 years in the asset management industry having joined
Aberdeen in 1997.
The Directors wish to express their thanks for all that Flavia has done for
the Company over many years and wish her well for her retirement.
Gabriel Sacks continues as lead manager on the Company's investment portfolio,
ably supported by Xin-Yao Ng. Both are backed by the wider Aberdeen Asia
Pacific equity team of analysts and investment managers based in the region.
The Manager's strength and experience in the wider region has underpinned the
performance delivered to shareholders since launch with the Company being the
best performing Asia investment trust amongst the AIC's 'ISA millionaires'1.
Under the Aberdeen team's portfolio management, the Company has delivered
sustained returns for shareholders, providing a net asset value total return
of 2,716% since launch in 19952.
abrdn Asia Focus offers a unique portfolio of high-quality, fast-growing,
businesses that are not represented in mainstream funds with uncorrelated
returns and good diversification.
Krishna Shanmuganathan, Chair, commented:
"I would like to thank Flavia for all her support for the Company over many
years, particularly in building such a deep pool of talent in Asia with our
Manager now employing 40 investment professionals across 6 countries in the
region - the success of which is amply demonstrated by the performance of the
Company. We all wish her well for her very well-deserved retirement.
"In the hands of Gabriel and Xin-Yao, the Board believes that the Company is
well placed to continue to deliver such long-term value for its shareholders."
Notes:
Investment Objective:
The Company aims to maximise total return to shareholders over the long term
from a portfolio made up predominantly of quoted smaller companies in the
economies of Asia excluding Japan.
1 abrdn Asia Focus plc was placed in 6th place (and the highest placed
investment trust investing in Asia alone) out of a total of fifty investment
trusts that would have made investors more than £1 million if they had
invested their full annual ISA allowance in the same trust each year over the
past 25 years (1999-2024), according to research dated February 2025 from the
Association of Investment Companies (AIC).
