Aug 19 (Reuters) - Dutch insurance group ASR Nederland ASRNL.AS beat market expectations for half-year capital generation on Wednesday, driven by strong performance across its divisions, but warned that rising competition may delay achieving its pension buyout target.
Insurers have upped pension buyouts — deals where a pension fund transfers its liabilities to insurance firms — since the Dutch government initiated a reform aimed at moving more than €1.5 trillion ($1.7 trillion) of pensions to defined-contribution plans, creating long-term earnings opportunities for insurers.
ASR has completed roughly €3.1 billion worth of pension buyouts since 2024, and finance chief Ewout Hollegien confirmed that the company's ambition to bring that number to €8 billion by the end of 2027 remained in place.
However, competition from rivals such as Achmea and Athora has made it more difficult to meet its strict 12% minimum return rate for these deals, thinning out the number of buyouts, Hollegien told Reuters.
"We are still committed to this market, still committed to the goal, but it might take two years more before we really get there," he said.
According to Dutch National Bank figures, the country's insurers had 15% of total pension liabilities on their balance sheets, translating into €230 billion, as of the third quarter of 2025.
Despite heightened competition, buyouts are still a good tool for scaling up returns, as the transfers contribute to insurers' results almost immediately.
This makes them particularly interesting to ASR, which is seeking to strengthen its position in the Netherlands.
It already considers itself the number-two player in the country, holding the pole positions in disability and pensions markets, having somewhat narrowed the gap to overall market leader NN Group NN.AS.
ASR's organic capital creation, measuring an insurer's own funds from business activities, grew 7.3% from a year ago to €773 million in the first half of 2026, exceeding the €743 million analysts polled by the company had predicted.
The shres rose close to 1% in early trading in Amsterdam.
