Polish unit of BNP Paribas reports estimate-beating quarterly profit

GDANSK, May 14 (Reuters) - BNP Paribas Bank Polska BNP1.WA reported a first-quarter net profit of 741.4 million zlotys ($195.82 million) on Wednesday, exceeding analysts' expectations of 608 million zlotys in a company-compiled consensus.

First-quarter profit in 2024 was 590.6 million zlotys.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

BNP Paribas BP is the fifth largest bank by assets in Poland and a unit of France's BNP Paribas BNPP.PA, the eurozone's biggest lender by assets, which holds a stake of 81.3%.

In March, the bank said it would unveil by the end of the year its new strategy for 2026 to 2030, after surpassing ahead of schedule its main strategic objectives for 2022 to 2025.

BY THE NUMBERS

Net interest income, a key metric reflecting the difference between earnings on loans and the cost of deposits, rose around 6% on the year to 1.49 billion zlotys in the first quarter, slightly short of a consensus forecast of 1.5 billion zlotys.

ADDITIONAL CONTEXT

In April, BNP Paribas said it was preparing to capitalise on opportunities from a trade war-induced economic slowdown, striking an upbeat tone even as it posted a decline of 4.9% in first-quarter net income.
