TOKYO, June 10 (Reuters) - Japan's Kansai Electric Power Co
Inc 9503.T has shut the No.4 reactor at its Takahama nuclear
power plant in western Japan for maintenance and refuelling, a
spokesperson said on Friday.
The utility shut the 870 megawatt (MW) reactor on June 8 and
plans to restart it in later October, the spokesperson said.
The shutdown leaves Japan with three operating reactors with
a capacity of 2,960 MW but Kansai also announced that it would
move forward the restart of its 826-MW Mihama No.3 reactor.
Shut since last October, Kansai said it would be able to
complete upgrades earlier than planned to meet stricter
anti-terrorism security rules adopted after the 2011 Fukushima
disaster.
The quicker restart is also in response the government's
request to make every effort to ensure stable power supply for
the peak summer demand to avert a power crunch, the spokesperson
said. urn:newsml:reuters.com:*:nL4N2XU1PH
Mihama No.3 is now expected to restart in early August,
instead of mid-October, he said.
The utility also expects to restart its Ohi No.4 reactor in
early July.
It has not decided when to restart its Takahama No.3 reactor
for which maintenance has been extended due to damage found in
heat transfer tubes of the steam generator.

Many of Japan's reactors are still going through a
relicensing process under safety standards imposed after the
2011 Fukushima disaster.
Nine regional power utilities and a wholesaler, Japan Atomic
Power Co (Japco), now have 33 reactors available for commercial
use, with a combined generating capacity of 33,083 MW.
The companies had 54 reactors operating before the Fukushima
disaster.
The table below shows the status of Japan's nuclear power
plants.
The regional utilities are: Chubu Electric Power 9502.T ,
Chugoku Electric Power 9504.T , Hokkaido Electric Power
9509.T , Hokuriku Electric Power 9505.T , Kansai Electric
Power 9503.T , Kyushu Electric Power 9508.T , Shikoku Electric
Power 9507.T , Tohoku Electric Power 9506.T and Tokyo
Electric Power (Tepco) 9501.T .
They are referred to in the table by their regional name.
