TOKYO, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Tohoku Electric Power 9506.T
restarted the 825 megawatt (MW) No.2 reactor at the Onagawa
nuclear power plant in northern Japan on Wednesday after fixing
some equipment, and it plans to resume power generation on
Friday, the company said.
The reactor was halted on Nov. 4 due to the faulty
equipment. The utility had resumed operations of the reactor on
Oct. 29 for the first time since the Fukushima nuclear disaster
in 2011.
On Wednesday, Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority decided
not to grant permission to restart a reactor at Japan Atomic
Power's Tsuruga nuclear power station in western Japan due to
seismic risks.
This marks the first time a nuclear power plant has been
denied restart approval since the authority implemented stricter
safety regulations for nuclear power plants in 2013.
Separately, Kyushu Electric Power 9508.T shut the No.2
reactor of its Sendai nuclear power plant in southern Japan on
Sept. 14 for scheduled maintenance, with a plan to restart it
later this month, a company spokesperson said.
As of Thursday, Japan had 11 operating reactors with a total
capacity of 10,717 MW.
Many companies are still going through a re-licensing
process to comply with stricter safety standards imposed after
the 2011 Fukushima disaster. The companies had 54 operational
reactors before it.
The table below shows the status of Japan's nuclear power
